check the incoming signal connections, if a cable is loose or damaged end on the coax can do this either at the set or the box if one is used, if you have another set connect it where this one is at, either the set, a box or a cable unless the provider is having a problem in your area..

worst case would be the tuner in the TV has failed but that is rare, there are some ways in that case to get around the problem.

Well, I can tell you it shouldnt have anything to do with your not having an HD box. The TV does not require a HD signal to give you a quality picture. The HD box only gives you the enhanced HD signal, but should work as any regular TV without it. How do you have it connected?

yes it could ba the cable itself even, but i suspect more the tuner circuit or tuner itself may have bad solder connections. Here is another test for you to try, plug another dvd or vcr, or xbox etc. into the back, using one odf the inputs. See if this works like the built in dvd. if so it will be more likely bad connections in the tuner or surrounding circuit. good luck.
