Normal 0 Two things can cause static.
First, If you have your speakers turned up to high it will give you feedback causing distortion and static. Best to use headphones when recording.
Second reason is, if you are using a laptop and have added an external microphone between the two it will cause distortion and static.
Not knowing the configuration of your computer makes it harder to analyze the problem.
So hope this is of some help. Bud

Audio works, but lots of noise (hiss) in the audio

Some lifecams need additional software or specific browsers according to your OS
Visit the microsoft website - enter the details of your cam and check out the 'readme' link also 'breaking and known issues link'

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=ICE

It may even be feedback from the incoming voice being picked up on your mic - headphones would prove that.

Finally you may have a laptop with a built in mic - check this
TEST SPEAKERS
Right click on speaker icon in System Tray
Select "Playback Devices"
The speaker icon ( checked as working) and volume level graph should be visible
Right click on the volume graph and click "Test"
Left hand speakers followed by right hand should be heard

SET DEFAULT & TEST MIC
Click "Recording" tab.
To set required mic as default - click on mic font to highlight and click "Properties"
In lower dropbox display "Use this device enable" click OK
Click "Levels" tab and ramp up sliders ( adjust to suit later)
Return to "Recording". Test mic by speaking and make sure volume graph displays
Restart computer
CONFIGURE TO SKYPE
On the 'Tools' menu, click 'Options'.
In the navigation pane of the Skype 'Options' window, click 'Audio Settings'
Run down the list setting your defaults
Select your webcam as the default microphone.
Make the test call
Click 'Save'
