Problems with recording and playback

Recently my cam has started to show a large gray square that covers 3/4 of the screen. I can see only a sliver of the taped movie. It also has no sound. I made sure the battery was charged and I used a new tape. When I download the tape, it too has the gray square.

That was just re-stating the obvious. Not a solution. If this is a tech area to provide solutions you might not have considered, then it falls short. Gee with this information, you might think that with in 8 hours of posting I would get offers from people who want to sell me a premium plan that might just state the real problem.

This is probably a lens or recording problem you'll need to take it in to a electronics store and see what they can do, My prediction is that the lens is cracked, or fractured in some way, which is only allowing that sliver to come through the good part. it could also bee a recording issue with the software in which case, you'll need to send it to where it came from, and get a new one.

hope this helped- snowsurfer58

well, I'm sorry if I didn't answer your question adequately. I never took apart a camcorder but my old sony mini DV, which had the same problem, I had to replace the lense, and CMOS censor, and I also had to reload all of the firmware onto the camera.

Gray bars on screen during video playback

My advice is that you should by a cleaning cassette. Put this in the camera and run it for 10 to 20 seconds only. running the cleaning cassette for a long time may damage the head.
good luck!

VCR Play Back is OK, but Recording produces Blue Screen on playback

If the heads are TOO dirty, a head cleaner will not help. If you are cinfident enough to open up the recorder, then they can be cleaned manually.

Disconnect the VCR from the mains.

Remove the screews from the side and back (if applicable) of the lid.

Remove the lid.

Look at the large drum (set at a slight angle) If you gently rotate the drum you will see 2 or 4 small sensors set into the drum.

Tear of a clean piece of A4 paper about 1inch square.

Hold between thumb and first finger and rub the centre of the paper against each sensor in turn. Make sure the edge of the paper does not catch the sensor.

After each sensor check the paper for dirt (black marks) and change paper if need be.

Try a recording / playback.

Repeat if necessary.

Image and sound problems at playback

your tape guides are out of calibration on all your pre - recorded tapes , or they are out of adjustment ( maybe even loose ) now ; - - put your camcorder close , next to your ear ? and . . . listen ! to a new tape in play mode - if you hear a fluttering sound like a deck of cards being shuffled softly , the camera is damaging all your tapes and needs alignment ;
