Question about Refrigerators

Inop Refrigerator...Tech says that I need a new compressor/pump

Help. What advice can you give me regarding a compressor/pump replacement for my refrigerator? The unit is 7 years old. How much should it cost (labor, parts)? Is it worth the replacement or is it time to buy a new unit?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Hi!
That is probably the compressor relay
The relay is on the compressor and needs replaced
A relay starts the compressor with a higher voltage and then quickly kicks out
Thats what is happening with yours
Its best for a tech to replace The relay but you can do it
Take your model number to your Local Appliance parts store they will have a diagram
showing you how to install the relay. Its called a hard start relay

Thank you for using fixya

What you are hearing is that the compressor is trying to start but can't..... The compressor could be bad (Locked Rotor) or the start capacitor could also be bad... I would try a new start capacitor or have the old one checked to make sure it is only the capacitor before I would condemn the compressor..... If you can get your hands on a 3 in 1 start capacitor you can try and see if the compressor will start also put an amp probe clamp meter to check if it drawing close to LRA on the name plate of the compressor..if it is and you have a good start capacitor then the Compressor rotor is locked up and you will need to replace the compressor or get a new or different refrigerator....

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician or HVAC tech to advise what work is needed.
Before you do any work yourself,
on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances,
always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

How do I install compressor for amana refrigerator. Can a home handy man install a compressor? Do I need freon?

Hi.The compressor motor is connected to the refrigerant system, which is not user serviceable. It will be necessary to have the compressor serviced, or replaced by a qualified technician. During this process, the pressurized system will need to be re pressurized. This will require special tools, and regulative equipment, as well. This can be very dangerous, and that is why I prefer to give proper advise on this type of repair. Kindly, contact your nearest service tech.

Technician states that we need to replace 8 yr old Amana Refrig

Without physically looking at unit and going on what your saying I would say the unit has a restriction in the sealed system. this can be fixed with the correct steps and techniques. the biggest question is expense and only you can determine that. Here are the steps necessary.
  • Isolate evap heatexchanger  assy flush with refrigerant and high pressure nitrogen to clear all oil and contaminants.

  • Isolate condenser and follow same steps as evap heatexchanger.
  • replace filter drier
  • Evacuate sealed system with good vacum pump

this is a time consuming process and quite honestly expensive. Hope that helps thx peyton

I bought a Frigidare refrigerator today. Warranty needed?

its really just up to you. I am a service tech in grants pass oregon and i know compressors dont last anymore. Its because in the last 10 years they have switched from r12 freon to 134a. 134a has higher head pressures which make the compressor go out. If the compressor warranty isnt too much money i would do that warranty. You dont really need the others.

Refrigerator stopped cooling and freezer stopped freezing

Sounds like it's time for some hands on tech to diagnose this situation! If only I was there i could do it for you!
But I think, no matter how it appears you need service.
Unless the appliance is 10 years old or more. The I'll tell you to replace it and save your money and electric bill too!

bless You,
if my advice was right then please give me a good rating here before you sign off!

Kenmore Refrigerator making loud sounds at shutdown

the compressor has a loose or broken spring inside the compressor, unfortunatly it can not be repaired without replacing the compressor, it could last many more years and it could quit as we speak.

best thing is to let the neighbor know of the problem and what is the repair that way they won't think you are ponning off the machine to them, it may outlast your new one, time will tell
