Did you buy it from a store or somebody you know? if you bought it from someone you know..it could just be a hunk of junk or have a virus in it or something. if you bought it from the store...make sure its compatible with your computer. if it is compatible and it still doesnt work....try calling customer service or just go to where you bought it and exchange it for a different one. hope this helps!

Why is there a question mark on my WD My Book 500 external Hard drive short cut?

Wow, Im amazed at the guy who threw his WD into the freezer for a week after a fatal crash and was able to get most of his stuff back! I was so frustrated after my second WD crashed that I gave up and used it as a door stopper. I was too bummed out to even bother returning it for an exchange, and when I did think of doing that, it was too late. I decided never to buy WD again, their drives are pure junk!

How to make my 500 mybook compatible with windows vista

Hello,

Normally by default, these external storage devices are pre-configured to work with Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. If you are having troubles making it work with Windows Vista, try to reformat the device with NTFS formatting and it should run smoothly.

Cheers!

External hard drives are plug and play, the drivers are build into windows.
IF the hard drive was connected when your computed crashed, and the hard drive was in use, it may have damaged it.
If it does not automatically connect to other PC's looks like it has been damaged

Computer will not recognize one 500 external hard drive- nothing wrong with connections- other external hard drives are fine. I have tried everything

What OS are u working on? some old ones dont recognize this big hard drives, cant remmember the limit but it was around 300. Try updating ur OS if u are working on windows xp(get it to Service pack 3). I think this problem was fixed at sp2, but just to be sure.

Replace bad HD with new 5oogb

This is a rather technical problem with MS Windows and the 48bit Logical Block Addressing scheme.
You can read more details here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303013

Short solution: You have to install Service Pack 1 (or better SP2) in order to get past this problem.
I assume that you had this disk in you computer before, so the BIOS should be able to handle this as well.
