Use Higher DPI settings on scanned text for OCR, than for copying,
in copies the printer does not know what it is looking at
in OCR machine logic has to determine what each shape is,
and translate it to a character.
at small DPI each letter may be too few dots high to easily differentiate between similar letters
compare the quality of 10pt text from a 9pin dot matrix printer, to 10pt text from a 1200dpi linotype or laser printer
higher dpi is easier to read, it is easier to OCR, the scan may take longer, the error rate needing correction will likewise be lower

A long time ago was scanning Telecom Australia paper bills into the first online service they had
My workstation, scanned at 1200 dpi, had no retyping
others were using 300 dpi then retyping all the errors
was paid by the page
I made way more money
even though the scans were about 5 times slower

Very crisp vertical grey line appears (glass clean)

I have the exact same problem. It was there since I first bought the MFC-7840W.
Vertical line appears in scans using the automatic document feeder (ADF).
Vertical line does not appear when scanning single page (placing it directly on the glass -- i.e. not using the ADF).

Cleaning the glass strip for the ADF (or the white pressure bar overhead) does not solve the problem.
The problem does not occur with copies using the ADF (using the COPY button which is basically a scan and print). This would suggest that dust and dirt is not to blame because that would also appear on the copies.
But since I believe a copy is basically a scan plus print, they should be using the same electronics -- a hardware problem on the scan would likely appear on a copy also -- there is some difference between how they accomplish this.
It's definitely not a software issue since it occurs on all versions of Windows and Mac OS X (and multiple computers). It also does not matter whether I "push" the scan to the computer by using the scan button on the MFC... or "pull" the scan from the MFC using the Brother Control Center software.

I am trying to find out how to put my curvise signature at the end of my e-mail messages rather than block letters.

Within Yahoo your choices are limited. If you create a file with bitmapped copy of your scanned signature, it will simply be an attachment. There are a couple of approaches you could try. First, you need to set up Yahoo mail to use 'Rich Text'. The default choices of fonts within yahoo are limited, but if you go to a local rich text aware program, such as Wordpad in Windows, you can select a suitable cursive font, type your name, then copy an paste it into Yahoo mail. In limited trials, the font shows up (provided the recipient has a mail program which can diplay rich text)
For your own handwriting, you would need to check out one of the transcription services which for a fee, will give you True Type font of your handwriting.

Vertical Light Streaks on text documents, both single and duplex

Clean the glass thoroughly using Isopropyl alcohol. Dont use solvents. Check if there is any scratch on the glass. Repeated scanning with stapler pins can scratch the glass. If it is scratched, you may need to chage it.

Question about copying direct from scan to a Word document

Check if your Canon software creates a PDF image. A scanned image is a RASTER image, a series of dots, that 'appear' like text or drawing. You cannot use Ctrl-C or Ctrl-v. If the software creates a PDF file, you can cut & paste. Usr any good OCR (Optical Character recognition) software ad convert the raster image to editable text. Then you can cut & paste.

Hp 4315 not scanning

I have the 4315 and have been scanning with it for years; however, when it hangs up on starting the scan,it is usually due to the quality of paper. For example, if the edge that is inserted is not straight and crisp, it may hang up. Try taking a brand new sheet of paper with test writing on it and see if it goes through. Does it make the sound like it is trying to scan and just can't "catch" the paper? Also do you get an error message?
