Question about Washing Machines
Help! We have a Kenmore front loading washing machine
Model# 417.44152400 It's only 3+ years old. It's been great, but in the last month, something has gone terribly wrong. Our clothes are coming out with big grey/black streaks on them & holes torn & ripped through them. I've lost many things already. The streaks are almost like melted rubber. Some of it you can actually "roll" off, but it totally destroys the piece of clothing. There is also a smell, like burning rubber or a chemical smell.
I'm afraid to wash anything else as we've already had to toss hundreds of dollars worth of towels & clothing. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be? Unfortunately we didn't purchase the service contract. I wouldn't buy a Kenmore washer again after this. Help, please??!!

I am a recently retired engineer of 20 years once you have ruled out anything getting inside the machine by accident etc, like something in pockets or greasy overalls, then its likely to be the drum bearings, has the machine started to get noisy on the spin the drum bearings are covered by a rubber seal, this seal gets damaged or worn and water leaks into the bearings themselves washing out the grease back into the drum where the washing is, you could also notice slight water marks on the floor underneath the machine on the floor, take the back off and look for water marks coming from the drum outer casing behind the pulley, these marks will be brown and will originate from a small drain hole, if any of the above change the bearings before any real damage is done, either to the clothes or the machine, as repair can be expensive? sorry, hope i have helped you as to where to look at least,

hmmm..let's see..sounds like you have some residue accumulating from something possibly seeping into the tub. That can be old rubber, a metal sheath, or even an leak of lubricant. Like an old car, there are parts of every mechanical device that need to be attended to.
I'd recommend you find the most seasoned person that works on older machines, to come by and assess what is 'leaking' on your clothing. Grey comes from something metallic or rubber/plastic.
Hope you can solve this one, and keep that old machine happy.

I dont see why there would be a magnet in the dispenser draw in the first place,,,, is it possible it somehow got in there by accident and when it fell out you thought it belonged in there ?

If you are sure that the pump is not blocked then try running the machine on a quick wash on its own with a little bleach in the drawer.
