Question about Washing Machines

Open Question

Kenmore 417 front loading washer eating my clothes!!

Help! We have a Kenmore front loading washing machine
Model# 417.44152400 It's only 3+ years old. It's been great, but in the last month, something has gone terribly wrong. Our clothes are coming out with big grey/black streaks on them & holes torn & ripped through them. I've lost many things already. The streaks are almost like melted rubber. Some of it you can actually "roll" off, but it totally destroys the piece of clothing. There is also a smell, like burning rubber or a chemical smell.

I'm afraid to wash anything else as we've already had to toss hundreds of dollars worth of towels & clothing. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be? Unfortunately we didn't purchase the service contract. I wouldn't buy a Kenmore washer again after this. Help, please??!!

Thanks

I got online to search for the answer to this very same question. I am completely disgusted and like the first poster, afraid to wash my clothes. Tonight was the 2nd time this has happened. The last time was several loads ago.

I have the same problem with clothes being basically for a lack of better words "shredded", but with our one year old GE front load washer. Not sure if the clothes are getting caught in between the door and the tub or what during the cycles. I had numerous shirts basically ruined because of this. I know when I load the washer, no clothes are hanging outside the tub when I close the door, so what could be happening?

I have the exact same problem. After using the washer for two years with no problems, I have had multiple items of clothes ruined, with holes in them and streaks of melted rubber around the holes. In addition, we have had to take the washer apart numerous times, because items of clothing are getting sucked into the pump, which keeps the washer from spinning out. This is very frustrating, because we purchased the washer to be more efficient by using less water and electricity, but we are spending more on replacing the ruined clothing. At first I thought I was filling the washer too much (the salesperson who sold it to me from Sears said I could absolutely stuff it), so I have tried washing smaller loads, but it doesn't seem to matter. Clothing is still being ruined almost every time I do laundry.

SOURCE: front loader washing machine = black streaks on clothing

I am a recently retired engineer of 20 years once you have ruled out anything getting inside the machine by accident etc, like something in pockets or greasy overalls, then its likely to be the drum bearings, has the machine started to get noisy on the spin the drum bearings are covered by a rubber seal, this seal gets damaged or worn and water leaks into the bearings themselves washing out the grease back into the drum where the washing is, you could also notice slight water marks on the floor underneath the machine on the floor, take the back off and look for water marks coming from the drum outer casing behind the pulley, these marks will be brown and will originate from a small drain hole, if any of the above change the bearings before any real damage is done, either to the clothes or the machine, as repair can be expensive? sorry, hope i have helped you as to where to look at least,

SOURCE: Old washing machine is starting to leave grey streaks on clothing

hmmm..let's see..sounds like you have some residue accumulating from something possibly seeping into the tub. That can be old rubber, a metal sheath, or even an leak of lubricant. Like an old car, there are parts of every mechanical device that need to be attended to.

I'd recommend you find the most seasoned person that works on older machines, to come by and assess what is 'leaking' on your clothing. Grey comes from something metallic or rubber/plastic.

Hope you can solve this one, and keep that old machine happy.

SOURCE: Clothes and towels don't smell fresh after washing

If you are sure that the pump is not blocked then try running the machine on a quick wash on its own with a little bleach in the drawer.

If it is the one I'm thinking there should be 2 screws that hold the bottom panel, that should give you access to most of the parts.

Kenmore Washer/Dryer Stack -- Need to replace Washer

first of all. comming from a Sears Technician.. (don't yell) -- the delivery drivers only know about delivering stuff. they dont know too much,
if the two are the same size they can be stacked.
sometimes have to rig something up
and yes, for that model the top is removed, clips go on the rear and screwed at the front.
in some areas it is sold seperatly as a stacking kit

try changing the door switch. Its either that or the speed controller. the door switch is cheaper and that is usually it.

I have a kenmore front load washer, model: 417 42042100
It makes loud noise and becomes louder during the spin cycle.
The drum is loose when I inspected through the front door.
My problem is how to open the cabinet and replace any broken parts.

Thanks.
