My outer screen has a crack in it. i know this is just a dust cover as i can still see a good picture through the crack. where can i find a replacement for the outer screen?
The problem here is Hitachi usually if it still has it sells all three screens as a unit---expensive.
You may want to search with GOOGLE the internet as some companies sell replacement "protective" screen replacements.
I have even seen one time someone found a piece of plexi-glass and had it cut to the exact size and thickness for a replacement.
That can be done. Look to see if there is an inch or more of space between outer clear screen and inner two screens.
You need to remove the entire front screen frame with all three---remove front speaker grill (should just pull off).
Behind it at bottom of frame for screen unit is a row of 4-6 screws that secure the bottom--remove those.
The screen is secured with pop connectors and you pull out to free it from bottom and then sides--once free it should LIFT up and slide clear--be careful not to scratch inner screens! Also if you twist it you can (do not want to) pop the screens out without warning.
Here is the hard part: with frame and screens out you will find screws (quite a few) inside that use plates to anchor the inner screens in place--You have to remove them to get outer one out.
Most of the time but not always the two inner ones are taped together along all the edges so they seem to be one piece.
If you get this far make sure to note which was facing front and up direction of front one---you get it back upside down or backwards (rear screen facing front) and you will not have a proper picture.
Front screen is secured with some screws and you may have to remove them or not as the outer screen is in a slot all the way around---If no screws look for inside the frame plates in the corners with screws--that version requires you pop the frame apart a little so you can get outer screen out.
Let me know if you have questions---also important not to let dust of any kind get between inner screens as it will show.

i have a 50" r.p. Hitachi, kinda had the same problem, it would go off at different times and i't hit on the back and get it to come back on,but after awlhile i'd have to hit it more and harder to get it back on till it quit, the menu would come on and would show the video 1 ,3 and that in the corner. After paying $75 for a guy to say it wasn't worth fixing i tried myself. Not knowing what i was doing, i checked all wire plug connections. Found 2 that wasn't seated good replugged them and still didn't work then tried the bulbs, just kinda jiggled all 3 one didn't feel the same so just tapped on it alittle and it popped, i guess back into place, anyway turned on the tv and it worked. Had moved it recentlly so i don't know if that is what moved the bulb. Hope this helps, also mine is a '94 model.
