I need to replace the dust cover on my Hitachi 53SDX01B

My outer screen has a crack in it. i know this is just a dust cover as i can still see a good picture through the crack. where can i find a replacement for the outer screen?

  • Anonymous Mar 21, 2012

i have seen some people post in other forums that they just remove the dust cover.. and actually get a better picture. not sure how difficult it is but if anyone has done it before please share the experience

  • Anonymous Mar 21, 2012

i will try that within the next few days. it seems simple enough since im pretty tech savvy with that era of electronics. if i run into a problem i will be sure to post on here for advice. and thanks a ton!

The problem here is Hitachi usually if it still has it sells all three screens as a unit---expensive.

You may want to search with GOOGLE the internet as some companies sell replacement "protective" screen replacements.

I have even seen one time someone found a piece of plexi-glass and had it cut to the exact size and thickness for a replacement.

That can be done. Look to see if there is an inch or more of space between outer clear screen and inner two screens.

You need to remove the entire front screen frame with all three---remove front speaker grill (should just pull off).

Behind it at bottom of frame for screen unit is a row of 4-6 screws that secure the bottom--remove those.

The screen is secured with pop connectors and you pull out to free it from bottom and then sides--once free it should LIFT up and slide clear--be careful not to scratch inner screens! Also if you twist it you can (do not want to) pop the screens out without warning.

Here is the hard part: with frame and screens out you will find screws (quite a few) inside that use plates to anchor the inner screens in place--You have to remove them to get outer one out.

Most of the time but not always the two inner ones are taped together along all the edges so they seem to be one piece.

If you get this far make sure to note which was facing front and up direction of front one---you get it back upside down or backwards (rear screen facing front) and you will not have a proper picture.

Front screen is secured with some screws and you may have to remove them or not as the outer screen is in a slot all the way around---If no screws look for inside the frame plates in the corners with screws--that version requires you pop the frame apart a little so you can get outer screen out.

Let me know if you have questions---also important not to let dust of any kind get between inner screens as it will show.

SOURCE: Hitachi 53SDX01B Rear Projection Television - No Picture

i have a 50" r.p. Hitachi, kinda had the same problem, it would go off at different times and i't hit on the back and get it to come back on,but after awlhile i'd have to hit it more and harder to get it back on till it quit, the menu would come on and would show the video 1 ,3 and that in the corner. After paying $75 for a guy to say it wasn't worth fixing i tried myself. Not knowing what i was doing, i checked all wire plug connections. Found 2 that wasn't seated good replugged them and still didn't work then tried the bulbs, just kinda jiggled all 3 one didn't feel the same so just tapped on it alittle and it popped, i guess back into place, anyway turned on the tv and it worked. Had moved it recentlly so i don't know if that is what moved the bulb. Hope this helps, also mine is a '94 model.

Need a lower rear board Part #H512264

No one has it in stock--board should be repairable unless lost etc.

http://www.partstore.com/Model/Hitachi+Ltd/Hitachi/53SDX01B.aspx

You might also contact PTS Electronics who repairs boards and may have one of these rebuilt as well.

If its the board with the RCA jacks it may be fixable.

Where can I get a replacement plactic screen cover

This set has 3 screens---the outer one is really only for glare--clear plexigalss--no longer available from Sony.

Sony 4-070-602-01
SCREEN, FRESNEL Sony 4-064-343-11
SCREEN, LENTICULAR Sony 4-058-894-11
SCREEN, PROTECTION (CONTRAST)Outer one is (Contrast) the other two inner ones are showing as available and about 180 each.

You would have to either have someone dismantle or do it yourself---most of these sets you have to remove all three screens from the rear of the set---then remove the outer contrast one if it is scratched or cracked--

If you get it out and measure it: It is possible you may be able to find a company who can cut you a plexi-glass piece to replace it with--lots of work to do this and you have to use extreme care when you remove the two inner screens--easy to damage them---Usually the inner two are taped along all the edges to keep dust etc from getting between them and the front one is a short distance forward of them.

The front protective screen is really only there for glare and to protect the inner screens from damage---I have seen people who had a cracked outer one just dismantle and remove that one---put the others back and use the set that way---have to be careful as the inner screens are easy to scratch or damage with the outer one removed.

Also---I have seen several where someone removed the outer one and got a piece of plexi glass big enough to put on the outside of the front of the set---secured all around the edges with velcro--does not look as good as the original but prevents glare and protects the inner screens.

If this told you something you did not know or helped you rate this solution as I do this here for free.

Hitachi 51UWX20B spider web like lines help

I know my response is a while after you asked, but to clean the inside of the tv case is pretty simple.

Remove the bottom speaker cover...on this model you just pull it off. There is no clips or screws.

Once the speaker cover is off you will see the bottom of the screen, there is 4-5 screws on the bottom on each side....I think 4 in the gray plastic and 1 in a black metal strap. With all of those screws out pull out SLIGHTLY on the screen and push up. The top is held in with a down force clamp and you are just popping it out of that....It will pop back in once you are done.

Now clean the back side of the screen, the mirror and CAREFULLY dust off the lenses. I myself did not want to use any cleaners (to avoid streaking) so I used a new microfiber dusting cloth. My picture became brighter and the "crack" that I thought I had was just a dust web....

Hope this helps and good luck

Crack and hole in the screen...

There are several parts distributors in the US that supply parts for Hitachi TV's You can try Herman Electronics, Tritronics and PAC parts, all have websites. Be prepared for the cost: a new screen will be in the $300-$400 range. It's not just a piece of ordinary plastic; it's actually two pieces of specially designed plastic designed to disperse the light evenly, called a lenticular and a fresnel.

Blue patch on left side of screen

I had the same problem with my Hitachi PJTX100. I discovered that there was considerable dust build-up inside the unit, causing insufficient venting of heat which then damaged the color prism/filter. It was close enough in time to the warranty for Hitachi to cover parts replacement (approximately $1,600). Since the repair, the blue patch is gone. I also regularly vacuum not only the outer cover but also the inner air filter that easily snaps on and off.
