Thanks I was looking for the physical location on the Laptop since I had no manuals. I found it and replaced the existing HDD. I am waiting for the window vista disk they were supposed to ship from Acer so I can re-install the operating system. I did not look for the jumpers before I installed it I toolk it for granted that there was no other options since it was a laptop. Was I wrong with that assumption.

This is a HDD replacement i assume. As long as you have the cd of your operating system amd know how to install it, then replacing the HDD drive goes like this: After unpacking check and verify that the jumper setting is set to master. There might be documentation that came with the product that tells you how it's set. If you look at the back part of the HDD where the data and power is connected, you'll see eight pins with a jumper connector that connecting 2 pins. Just verify that it's set to master, but usually it's already set. There should be a little diagram on the product label of the part that shows which position the jumper is to be set. In your case, if it's going to be the only HDD installed on the pc, the setting should be as master. By looking at the diagram, it shows what position the jumper is positioned and with which pins. It's easy, now once that's verified, it's now time to disconnect the old one. First, unplug the pc and open the case. Observe how the old HDD installed, and what connectors. You'll probably need a philip screwdriver, but you'l need to disconnect the wires which will only consist of a data cable and power. Keep in mind that it's important to handle this part carefully. Don't drop, shake, or shock it because the flying heads that read/write data to/from the hard disk has a tolerance less than the thickness of hair. Once the new HDD is installed, power it up eand enter the BIOS and make sure that it's detected. And as the pc is powered up, listen in for the operation of the HDD. It' will make an obvious noise when it receives power, and that's just to assure it's operating. From this point, you'll be in the process of installing your OS. Along with the Windows cd, change the boot order, priority, sequence, or whatever and make the cd-rom boot first in the sequence. Once done, you can press ESC, and then F10 to exit. It should restart and initiate post. You'll see a question "boot to cd...". once you see that, press enter to begin setup. I hope this explains and helps you with the problem.

Why did you replace the battery ?. You may need to do a CMOS reset/clear and there maybe a jumper on the board. If not turn the power off at the mains and remove the battery for 5 mins then refit and power up with keyboard and monitor connected enter the BIOS and set date and time save and reboot.

Dell e310 won't start after power failure ,orange

First up, don't buy a Dell again unless you like old **** with horrible support.

On Topic

- Did you pull out the keyboard and try another USB port (if it is an USB keyboard), or try another keyboard.
- If that doesn't work try clearing the CMOS (remove power plug, power on (to empty capasitors), either remove the CMOS battery and power on, or find a jumper to reset the CMOS. (since this is a Dell a that might not exist but check the manual).

I have a dell optiplex gx620 and it wont turn on all it does is the power button flashes orange.

As you can imagine, this is not simple thing to diagnose.
First, we need to try Dell's steps to fix...
Remove non-essential peripherals…
Except for the monitor, keyboard, and mouse, remove all external peripherals including:
  • Scanner
  • Printer
  • Modem or Network cables
  • Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)
  • USB flash drive or other external Hard Drive
  • Any other external devices (e.g., USB-attached devices)
  • Remove the computer from the docking station, if you are using one

Try rebooting. If that doesn’t work, Dell states you need to do the next step.
Remove and Reseat Basic Hardware items:
  1. Power Cord
  2. Memory
  3. Hard Drive
At this point, Dells says if that fails contact them.

If my hunch is correct, you may have something on the motherboard shorting a connection or you have a blown capacitor. Get some “canned air” and blow out the computer thoroughly. Some people have reported the same symptom having dust or other debris causing the issue, so give it a good blowing out,

At the same time, inspect your motherboard thoroughly for an anomalies. If you see anything resembling the picture below, you have a serious motherboard problem which will require replacement.
