find a DR software to recover the data,if the data is very important, then you'd better go to a DR company.
Meanwhile,if you want to use the dr tool, you can use the HD Doctor for Maxtor, but u will spend some money

SOURCE: maxtor one touch external hard drive suddenly

Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.

Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external , go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".

If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.

Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.

Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.

  1. The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
  2. The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
  3. The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.
The latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem. On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be free.

The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.

The last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.

A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.

I hope this solves your problem and please reply if you need more help.

Kind Regards

There are only two connectors on a SATA drive, namely POWER and DATA.
Check that both cables are securely connected.

Try the disk-drive in some other computer.

Hi,no your not sol
First is the drive beeing seen when you open (my computer)if not thats one problem, and is easly fixed.Just go to start and type troubleshooting open that, now looking to the left side top of that screen you'll see view all, left click that,a new window will open.look for (Hardware and Devices) and left click that,This will find and reinstall the correct driver for any connected drives, follow the directions and restart if needed. Now you should be able to get back into the drive in question,if not try booting your system from your CD rom with your windows disk in place, booting from your windows disk will load all needed win 32 drivers by seem to have an idea of installing so I'll not get into how to boot from the disk hope this has helped...
Another option would be to go to and try reinstalling the drivers (I find it best to save to the desktop then install) also having the drive connected via a usb caddy, the drive must be set as a slave drive, the sticker on the drive should show the correct setting.good luck post back with your operating system for further help.

I have re loaded maxtor onto anothe computer using the start up disc but when executing a window appears asking for driver information. what do i need to do ?

it is asking for the drivers that it needs to "talk" toyour drive. a driver is a small software program that makes a hrd ware device work. when you bout the drive there should have beena disc with drivers on it. perhaps the startup disc even. unplug the drive from the computer and install the drivers then re plug it in. it should work. if you do not have the drivers for it you can get them from
but most likely the disc you have has them on it. the trouble you have is that you MUST unplug the drive and install the drivers FIRST. othwise you will get an error asking for the drivers.
so just unplug it and put the disc in you drive and look for "install drivers" option when the cd starts up.

My 7Y250MO hard drive starts clicking and after a few seconds the system locks up only fixed by powering down and restarting.

Try doing the self-test for the hard drive. It could be a sign of hard drive failure. Just boot to BIOS go under diagnostics then select Primary Hard-drive Self Test. In hp notebooks, we use f10 after turning it on to boot into bios. Ask your computer manufacturer how to boot to BIOS. If you're Hard drive passed the test you might want to try re-installing the operating system. It could be a sign of Windows crashing. If you're Hard drive failed. There you go. You have to replace the hard drive. Hope this helps.

The only thing you can do is replace the drive. You might be able to burn some data to a CD or DVD or external hard drive before the replacement, but it cannot be guaranteed.

My Maxtor suddenly stopped working, no more power. I took it out of the hardcase and there's a brown stain (burned) on the SMOOTH chip. Any chance on recovering the data? Thanks

You can buy another caddy with all the electronics for the drive inside, so basically you continue to use your drive in a new caddy and no need to recover data.
I lost a drive once and now backup all my important video, etc. onto dvd as a precaution.

Master slave jumper settings on 250gb Maxline Plus II SATA

There are no master/slave settings on SATA drives because each drive has its own cable. The drive order is determined by what SATA port they are plugged into, or by the BIOS configuration.
