This happened to my dell, it was the inverter in the display, does your display get really warm on the bottom, feel the back of it.

When you close the top, there is a switch of some kind that tells the PC you top is closed turn off the monitor, I have also seen this switch go bad. you can go into your power setting and change this.

Or it could be bad drivers for your display, or your video card might be bad.

What you can try is connect a monitor to the display output, then when your screen goes black, that will tell you if it is your screen.

When it goes black, what happens when you move the top back and forth.

Try a CTRL+ALT+DELETE and select Start Task Manager and see if you can turn off some stuff to see if you can correct it. If you do it and it keeps happening and the same thing needs to be shut down try to see what it is related to and try to uninstall it.

Hello, i broke the screen on my laptop wanting to switch it to my desktop monitor but for some reason it wont switch over. unfortunately since i cant see the screen i cant get into my startup menu any...

First, disconnect the laptop from the ac adapter and take off the battery and the memory. Press the reset button on your laptop. Connect your ac adapter only and press the power button two or three time while everything else is disconnected. Then, re-install your memory and your battery. Connect the ac adapter to the laptop and to your power source. Now turn on your laptop and see if you get a display on your laptop screen. If you do, then you have reset everything and you are back to where you started. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Yes my dell xps 410 is barely used but the problem im having is when i turn it on that the picture is snowy u know like when the cable goes out or when you cant get no reception i cant get nothing on...

That's a very strange problem. The typical problem with a monitor is that there is no signal, and so the screen goes into a "screen saver" mode. It sounds like it is behaving as if it were a TV. Does your computer have a TV tuner on it? Some models have this option. I'm just wondering if you might have accidentally changed something. Was it working fine up until just now?

I have a HP Pavilion laptop ze4900. Every time I move th screen, the display either goes off completely, or it goes vey dim and I cannot read anything from it. The only thing I can do to get a display

You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp.
To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions.

Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:

  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

My Gateway CX200 Laptop monitor is getting darker with a pinkish hue to it. is it my LCD display or the inverter chip or what?

Most likey, bad news im affraid, its the screen just going bad. Usually theres nothing that can be done. You can try reseating the ribbon cable and see if that improves it, but most likely it wont, they usually have only so many operating hours before the crystals or plasma goes out, depending which it is. Plasma usually goes out quicker than LCD.

Try finding a replacement on Ebay or online somewhere.

Good luck.

P.S. im asuming of course that you know a little about what you are doing and it isnt something like the display settings or contrast.

There should be a key on the top keyboard row on the laptop, probably one of the "F" keys that you use along with the "Function Key" on the laptop to enable an external monitor. The laptop display will turn off and the external monitor should come on.

The builtin video card is probably bad. Yes, you can get a PCI video card.
