Question about Computers & Internet

Internet connection Just bought an HP desktop and cannot alter the protocol settings from PPoE to PPoA

Thanks for your help but I think my original request was a bit misleading. We live in Italy and the modem is a 'Conitech router ADSL 2/2 + wireless 54Mbps'. On a previous computer we did have to change the protocol settings via control panel-"ADSL". This is not available on the new computer? Has "ADSL" been removed?

Assuming you are still not dial-up, those protocol settings are controlled by the modem and/or router that you use in your network, not the PC itself. If you do not know how to access these, please let me know your model numbers and I will try to help further.

Thank you for the follow-up information, and let me say that your English is excellent. As I explained in my first response, PPoE and PPoA are attributes which are controlled by the router.

BUT it is possible to control a router from a PC if the ISP - in your case, Conitech - supplies a program to do so. In other words, this program would make the changes to the router so that you do not have to log-on to the router. Some ISPs do this so that you can control your entire network from one place and do not have the confusion of trying to manage another piece of hardware.

Since you bought a new PC, the program that was supplied by Conitech to control your router is not installed. So you will have to find the CDROM that came with the Conitech Router and go through the installation process.

BUT, if you have lost the CDROM, you can still log-on to the router and make the change to the PPoE setting. I checked the Conitech website, and they do not have the manual for your particular router (it appears you may have an older type). I found a model that is likely close to your router, and I have provided a link to it below (I downloaded the "manuale_completo" on the bottom):

If you look on Page 22, you will see instructions on how to log-in to the router. Then on Page 31, you will find instruction on how to change from PPoE to PPoA.

I believe this is a link to your router model:

Manuals and drivers are not available, but you could use the SUPPORT link to ask a question and see if they can provide the installation CDROM for you.

Thanks again for providing more information!

Can you tell me what the basic settings are for AOL connection in the UK? PPPO-A o PPPO-E? LLC or VC? etc.

It all depends upon your router and broadband / internet connection, as it is all based upon what connection to the net you have

PPOE is over ethernet for Cable type connections

it is normally for this router, but if you have pinged it the router must be ok, double check your isp password and usename and PPOe or PPOA setting and that the mtu is set correct for your isp.

2 wire 2701 router

assuming all the settings (PPOA/PPOE etc) are correct and as long as you know you have got a broadband connection and it's not your service providers fault, check the you dont have a line fault then unplug the router for 30 seconds or so and try again.

It wont connect

if you have reset the router for any reason, you must have the incorrect settings eg PPOA PPOE or you have not entered the correct password and username. It is also possible that your broadband connection to your isp server is down. On the other hand if you have installed this modem/router in place of a dial up modem or a broadband modem, your modem is still trying to connect, which needs to be dissabled as when you use a router you do not have to click connect unless you are in the routers settings as you are always on line, unlike a dial modem, so you should have uninstalled the modem driver. If you have just installed the router you need to open up internet explorer>tools>internet options>connections and choose never dial a connection, unless its all greyed out, in whicj case you need to go back into the router and check the settings.

Assuming you have set all your ISP's connection details correctly eg PPOE or PPOA, VC-MUX etc, double check you username and password, check your adsl filter and check there is no line noise on the phone line. It could be that the router needs reseting by way of a small reset hole at the rear of the router or it may well be that your ISP's server is down.
