I am getting horizontal lines suddenly in all the pix I take with this camera. The lines show on the image screen and when pix are uploaded to the camera. I saw a service advisory is this the "picture defect" they are referring to?

It sure sounds like the CCD is acting hinky on you from time to time. Check out http://www.nikonusa.com/email_images/nikonusa/service_advisory/coolpix.html and call the 800 number in the advisory for better advice from Nikon repair people. This problem seems to be manifesting itself with lots of different kinds of screen displays. Mine just went black. Nikon was very good about making the free repair - all I paid was the cost of sending the camera to them. Don't send your battery, memory card, camera strap or lens cover. All they need is the camera body.
Hey mneeth, I would first try formatting the memory card, but remember when you do this it will erase all the images on your memory card so upload your images to your computer first. If this doesn't work I would try resetting the camera to its factory settings which can be done from the setup menu. I hope this helps! Sincerely, Allan Go Ahead. Use Us.
Don't rush to the store. CCD's in video cameras have it, My Coolpix has it. It has something to do with the way information is written to or read from an LCD or CCD. And although it looks bad, it's perfectly normal. Use an early days $50,000 broadcast CCD videocamera to record a person welding and you'll get a perfectly vertical white line in your image. But as you said: It's not in the actual image of the Coolpix (although I wouldn't know if it will show up when you make a picture of someone welding).
