Zenith 60" no pic brief light up display

Zenith P60W26P 60 in plasma, no pic, power light comes on green, display "lights up" for about 2 seconds then goes black. I heard these may be under warranty from Zenith but this unit is about 5 yrs old. If it's a bad board I can replace it myself just don't know where to start the diagnostics.

Tried leaving it unplugged, still same outcome. Is there a way to test the power board? Is there a service manual for this unit?

  • Tyler Feltz Nov 09, 2008

Power board appears to be working, what about Y and X boards and sus board, how can those be tested. Trying to find a service manual but no luck.

  • Tyler Feltz Nov 14, 2008

No visible signs of buldging or leaking capacitors viewing from the top, haven't started pulling boards yet. I have a capacitence meter and can check one by one if need be, on a different plasma the x and y board needed replacement, I just replaced them but didn't go through and test each component.

Link is for owners manual, service manual not available on this site. Thank you.

A good starting point would be to get the service manual from this website posted by ginko but you could not see since the rating was already there when he answered with a second post. Measuring all the voltages to the other circuits would give you a better idea if the power supply is the culprit in this case.

A five year old TV set will probably have some power capacitors that have failed. I would do a quick check on the power board (the board that is connected to the AC power cord). Look for large and medium capacitors that are bulging on the tops, missing the tops, or leaking fluid onto the circuit board. Since the TV is 5 years old, replacing all of the main capacitors would not be a bad idea, as their life span is usually 3-5 years. Use the same uF caps to replace. Use the same voltage rating or higher. A little higher is better of course, (sometimes they mess up the design and use a cap with to low a voltage rating.) You can test the caps you remove by hooking them up to a few volts. then see if it holds the charge. If the voltage is slowly declining, the cap is bad. Large caps should hold a steady charge for a long time. Remember to short out the caps before you mess with them, they usually hold their charge a long while.

To test the power board could be potentially dangerous because the tv has to be in the plug when you do it. You could try getting a new warranty on it which would be most likely less than fixing the tv yourself, or getting a professional to test it for you to be on the safe side, but if you want to try, here's how to: Get an amp meter to test for a bad fuse or bad part of your circuit board. Then unscrew the back cover of the tv and take it off slowly just in case there is a cord in the way. Then plug the tv in and let it sit for about 2 minutes and then start testing the circuits, fuses, and the ends of the power connections to see if any are blown or not receiving power. If there are any, then that is where your problem is.

if the problem still presits as the same then you can continue to repair the tv technically.

when you open the tv back cover on the main power supply board there is a tiny fuse located on it .if that FUSE is blown you get such problems.

also on that main board u can check out for capacitors that r blown or bulged or leaked due to heavy voltage.just replace that faulty ones through soldering iron.and let the new 1 dry.then ON the tv and check.

Try first leaving the unit unplug for one ohour or so , if this does not clear the error, then I suggest to call Zenith and ask the cost for a Guaranty extension.

To test soustain boards (Y-sus and X-sus) you check the most common faults, that are the board fuse, and FET fall, where you test FET ICs:

You should also test the control board connectors to sustain board, and there are several test to do on main board, when you have no raster.

The picture above was from service manual for a different model, unfortunately I do not have service manual for your model.

The service manual is not available for free download, you can buy it here for a small fee:

If you want to DIY , then buy the manual.

Alternatively use the number listed on the owner manual to call a technician.

50 inch plasma zenith tv power and picture comes on for a second then it pops and goes back off and light goes to red help me need to know if its worth fixing ?

The set has an internal problem and should cost about 200.00 or so for the part. Available at a Zenith dealer. Labor should be reasonable. Is it worth it? If the set has been reliable till now, maybe it is worth keeping around another couple of years. Strictly your call, man. I have the same one at home and it is sweet. By the way, that set is actually manufactured by LG with the Zenith logo on it.
