You MAY have a problem related to the HDMI and to prove or disprove it I would connect Component if you can.

We had the same problem. Called Sony and they advised there was a "Software Mismatch" and suggest using a newer set top box. I'm just going to use the component. You would think they could resolve this with a firmware flash or something. Hope this helped.

I had the same problem with the same configuration. In addition to the HDMI which is (DVD and Audio OUT only by the way) you need to connect the TV to the DVD through a high quality SCART cable as well. Remember to connect the SCART cable only while both the TV and DVD are switched off. To get the TV sound out of the DVD surround sound you need to click the FUNCTION key on the DZ230 remote a couple of times till you get the word TV on its screen, this is when you should hear the TV sound coming out of your surround sound as expected. Have you try to replace your HDMI cable?I recommend you to pick up a good Monster HD700 HDMI cable from a local retail store like best buy or circuit city.In case it isn't the cable problem,you could return it.
However,when you are a using the HDMI cable,it is normally either have both picture and sound or nothing at all.Are you sure you didn't hook up the audio OUTPUT from your TV back to a receiver input?
Or even an optical output from the TV to the receiver?

You will have to go into the settings of the hd box by pressing the settings button twice and then scroll down to "audio digital out". chances are that it is set to Dolby Digital. If you right arrow over you can then set it to HDMI. this should bring your volume back. Hope this helps.
