Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+
When you press any remote or the wall switch, the light on the opener comes on and you can here a clink but the door does not move.
Model 139.53985D Serial 484512200423 Manuf. 11/24/05
Door opens fine, but will not close. The click can be heard and trolley will move 1/4 to 1/2 an inch. Repeated pushing of the switch will continue this action until the trolley hits the stop bolt, then just the click is evident. Its as if the opener doesn't get the signal to turn around and go the other way when it hits the open limit. I know the limit switch is working because the opener will stop, just won't close on the next cylce.
At first I thought the down pressure needed adjusting, but it was all the way up. Next I thought the door was jamming, so I replaced the springs which helped the door move more smoothly, but didn't help the opener problem.
I dug around and found the manual which told me the 5 flashes of the LED meant the RPM sensor was bad. I replaced it and the first time I pushed the switch it didn't work, the second time the door went down. I readjusted the limits and the safety reverse system until everything worked properly. I cycled the door over and over until the motor overheated. Once it reset I tested again and everything worked fine.
That lasted three weeks. Now the problem is back and I am still getting the same diagnostic code. I don't believe the RPM sensor is bad because after many hours of jacking with the limits, unplugging the unit from the wall, taking the cover off and unplugging the limit assembly from the logic board, and cussing at it, it will work properly again. Sometimes it will be OK for a few cylcles, sometimes for a few days.
I have already thrown $30 at the springs, and $40 at the sensor and rush freight, so I'm not going to put $100 into a new logic board whether it is the fix or not.
What I want help with is am I missing something simple or should I junk it and get something else?
