If you have a bootable CD/Install disk, it will have the tools for formatting a drvice built in.
For example. If you have a Windows XP install CD, boot to the CD, and part of the install routine is to delete/create and format partitions.

You could have a look in My Computer to see if the drive is accessible there.

1.) If it is then I suggest you make sure you have copied the following files from the drive and saved them on PC (to be able to reinstall Maxtor Manager if you ever want also to format the drive) :-

chas6_4.jpg

- then uninstall and reinstall Maxtor Manager
(for some reason this program tends to become corrupt).

2.) If this none of this helps, you could download Seatools diagnostic and repair program from Seagate to see if the drive is ok or to try to repair it.

Tip

MAXTOR DRIVES: Vista and Win7 cannot see the drive

Seagate Troubleshooters
If OneTouch or other Maxtor (now Seagate) external drive does not appear in My Computer, this is the stage in the Troubleshooter at Seagate's website which could help, e.g. for Windows Vista or 7:-
http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=194531&Hilite=

There are links to other suggestions but if this does not reveal a solution, the drives have a five year guarantee and Seatools can be downloaded free to check the drive and warranty status from the serial number of the drive.

Seatools
There are clear instructons and the Seatools utility may be able to diagnose, repair, or format the drive to solve the problem.

Also, if OneTouch is faulty, the Seatools report code will be required to get it replaced:-

I would like to delete all of the information on the maxter 3200 that I have now (it is formatted to an apple mac) so that it is empty - how do i do this?

It depends on why you are formatting the drive? Getting rid of it or just "starting over"?

If you are just "starting over" you can try downloading one of the Disk Utility applications that Maxtor has (Seagate bought Maxtor so it's on the Seagate website - http://www.seagate.com) - I believe the "SeaTools" utility might have an option to format the drive - not sure if SeaTools is specific to Seagate drives or if there is a different app you'll need for a Maxtor. I'm not a Mac person but there also might be a way to format the drive from the Mac OS.

If you are getting rid of or recycling the drive and want to make sure that there is absolutely nothing left on the drive you can do 1 of 3 things:
  1. Look for a utility that will do a "low-level" format of the drive. SeaTools from Seagate (or a Maxtor-specific app if required)
  2. Use a "data shredding" application that not only deletes the data but also overwrites the sectors with zeroes.
  3. Get a really big magnet and rub it against the hard drive 5 or 6 times (no joke).

Boot problem

Since this is a fresh install of windows, suggest you download the manufactures hard disk drive floppy disk setup software. Each manufacture has their own bootable setup software that works in a DOS like window. You'll be able to check the drive, set the drives
FAT = File Allocation Table. Check the drive for errors & format the drive just to name a few things.
Once completed remove the bootable floppy disk/CD.
Insert your windows CD & reboot your system. Install windows again. (Do not use windows to format your drive. (You'll have already done that with the manufacture's software disk/CD).
Example, here is the link for Seagate IDE drive's;
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools

Here is the link for Maxtor drives;
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/maxtor_desktop/

Western Digital drive's;
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?wdc_lang=en

Samsung hard disk drive's;
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/utilities/Support_DiskManager.html

My bet is there is something not right with the drive. Using the manfacture disk software will correct just about any problem that may be hindering data to be written to the drive.

Good luck!

There are a lot of Maxtor drives that are bad. Suggest you download Maxtors (MaxBlast 5) utilities software to check the drive. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/maxtor_desktop/
OR you can also run Seagates software on you're Maxtor drive. Seagate bought Maxtor. Download SeaTools for DOS.
Follow the instruction given online. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools
Please go through "See the tutorial".

Good Luck!

If the following determines you have hard drive failure then you may have to purchase a new HD. Follow what is recommended from the manufacturer below. READ EVERYTHING.

According to Seagate the makers of Maxtor, you have a DiamondMax 10 (6L080M0). See below or click here

My internal hard drive may be defective, how can I test it?

Question

My internal hard disk drive may be defective, how can I test it?

How can I determine if the problem is with my system or with the hard drive?

It is necessary to run the SeaTools, SeaTools Enterprise, or SCSIMax diagnostic before contacting Technical Support 1.800.SEAGATE (1.800.732.4283) on an internal drive that may be defective.

Answer
For Seagate or Maxtor (or Quantum) ATA drives:

If this is a Seagate or Maxtor (or Quantum) ATA or SATA drive, please download the SeaTools for DOS diagnostic to test it. If the drive is failing, the tests in SeaTools for DOS will indicate as such.

If the BIOS does not recognize the drive or the drive does not spin please reference Answer ID: 48

The operating system will not recognize a drive that is not formatted and partitioned. If you need help with formatting:

  • Windows 2000 Answer ID: 880
  • Windows XP Answer ID: 3361
  • Windows Vista Answer ID: 3844
  • Macintosh Answer ID: 492

    For Seagate SCSI drives:
    Please download the SeaTools Enterprise Edition diagnostic.

    For Maxtor (or Quantum) SCSI drives:
    Please download the SCSIMax diagnostic.

    SeaTools, SeaTools Enterprise, and SCSIMax will test your S.M.A.R.T-compliant ATA, SATA, or SCSI disk drive for media defects, perform a read test, physical head test and ensure the hard drive is functioning correctly.

    If all the tests pass (no trouble found), the problem remains elsewhere in your system. Reconfirm all settings for hard drive jumpers, cables, and ATA, SATA, or SCSI controllers, and disk operating system. Consult your host controller documentation or system manufacturer for assistance with SCSI termination or ATA / SATA controller capabilities.
