You need a DVD/RW drive that support that kind of disks.

If you already have one and your system does not read them, probably you need an update of the firmware of your drive (usually you can get the last firmware from manufacturer of your cd/dvd drive website)

It looks like you'll have to either return it or perform a default factory recovery. These instructions are from their site but proceed knowing that this will erase any data that is stored on the primary partition (meaning if you have anything on it, it's gone...). Esentially it resets it to a point as if you just picked it up in the store (which you did.. :( )

How can I restore my computer with the backup discs I created?
With user created backups you are able to restore your computer to the factory default settings. If backup discs were created instead of factory restore discs, these can be used instead and will restore the system to a user backup point.

How can I restore my computer with the backup discs I created?
With user created backups you are able to restore your computer to the factory default settings. If backup discs were created instead of factory restore discs, these can be used instead and will restore the system to a user backup point.
    1. Ensure that the computer is completely shutdown, then turn on the computer.
    2. When the eMachines splash screen appears, tap the Alt and F10 keys simultaneously. A screen stating "Starting eMachines eRecovery" should appear.
    3. From the recovery options, choose Restore system from CD/DVD.
    4. Insert either the first Recovery or Backup disc that you created.
    5. From the on-screen options, choose a backup.
    6. Click OK and the installation will begin.
    7. Change the disc as necessary when prompted.

If you do not have a recovery disk:

    8. Restart the computer.
    9. When the eMachines logo appears on the screen, press the Alt and F10 keys repeatedly.
    10. If you are prompted with a Microsoft Windows boot screen, press the Enter key.
    11. After the system recovery application has loaded, follow the prompts to reinstall the Operating System.

Had to replace hard drive. Can't reboot using system restore disks. System recognizes new drive, but error message says disks are not for this computer. Got disks when computer was purchased. No...

You may have just recieved the wrong set of restore discs for your computer. Have you replaced the motherboard in this computer at any point? The discs look for a specific code stored within the motherboard bios to keeps people from using system restore discs to install an operating system on whatever computer they want.

You can try contacting the manufacturer to see if they will send you another set of restore discs. They often charge for these, however, if you explain your situation to them they may send you another set at little to no charge.

Hope this was helpful

On my Dell Inspiron 580 it will no longer burn CD-R discs.

If it burns other discs just fine and not CD-R discs, I would suggest you try a few diferent brands of discs. That should alleviate your issue. If it doesn't, its probably a good idea if you just replace the drive completely. You have purchase one from a local electronics retailed for around $30.

I would like to reset my computer completely

If you have the original system installation discs, put the number one disc in the computer and boot from it, follow the prompts and insert discs as they are requested. When the discs are fully installed, connect to the internet and run windows update.

Extracting old files from computer discs.

I am not sure if I understand, but in the second statement you said that you have another large computer with large and small disc drives. Can you still open up the 5.25 inch foppy discs, and save it to that computer, and later extract it off using 3 inch floppy?

I click F10 to do a recovery and now my computer will not start

Did you make the backup discs as the system said before you used your computer. It sounds like the recovery is failing on the computer, and unless you made a set of those discs, you will have to call HP to order the recovery set.

HP MEDIA CENTER 864N Desktop PC&p RECOVERY CD

NOTE: Most HP and Compaq desktop PCs that ship with Windows Vista and XP do not come with recovery discs. Instead, they use a hidden space (partition) on the hard drive to store the recovery information. Using a hidden partition provides a convenient, more stable recovery solution.
Step 1: Create a set of recovery discs or a recovery DVD
To create the recovery disc set, Click Start , All Programs , PC Help & Tools (or similar), open the HP or Compaq Recovery CD-DVD Creation software, and follow the on-screen directions.
If you cannot create recovery discs or your discs have become damaged, continue to the next step.
Step 2: Order recovery CDs on the Web
If you are not able to create a set of recovery discs, you may be able to order a set of replacement discs from HP. HP maintains a stock of replacement recovery discs for several years after the product has been released. However, because of licensing restrictions, HP is only able to provide these recovery discs for a limited time. If your computer is several years past its warranty period, HP may not be able to supply replacement discs for your computer. If this is the case, you can install a new operating system that meets the minimum system requirements of your computer, or, alternatively, upgrade your computer hardware.
To find out if HP has recovery discs that you can order and to order them from HP, use the following steps:
NOTE: The steps in this section apply to United States and Canada. For Europe, Middle East, and Africa please refer to the HP support document Europe, Middle East, and Africa - Statement on the Availability of the Recovery Software on CD . For other countries/regions, contact your local HP support center for information about obtaining recovery CDs.
Go to the Software & Driver Downloads page .
Enter the product number or model name for your computer into the field provided.
Figure 1: Product name/number field

Click the operating system link (the version of Windows that came with your computer).
Figure 2: Example of operating system link

Find the Recovery Disc ordering section and click the link to start the ordering process.
NOTE: Before trying to order, make sure that you have read the important "Read this..." information listed in this Recover Disc ordering section.
Note: - If the link to order a recovery disc set is not available, there may not be any more sets available for purchase. HP cannot create recovery discs that contain a version of Windows that has been obsoleted by Microsoft, such as Windows 95, 98, and Me. Some recovery disc sets may have run out of stock and may not be available to order.
Figure 3: Recovery disc ordering links
7640107.gif
Follow the directions from the "Read this...” article and from the ordering pages to complete the ordering process.
NOTE: The ordering pages use a secure connection to protect your privacy.
If you cannot create a recovery disc set and you cannot order a recovery disc set from HP, go to the next step.
Step 3: Contact Support
If you have tried the steps 1 and 2 and could not create or obtain a recovery disc set, contact HP Customer Care . HP Customer Care may be able to send out new discs or replace defective versions depending on your situation and availability.

Can I order a disk to format my compaq computer

If what you want to do is order discs to format your computer and reinstall Windows, then yes. Call 1 800 HP INVENT and let them know that you'd like to order a set of recovery discs. They'll probably want your serial number which is usually located on the back of the computer.
