Question about Kenmore 53642 / 53644 Side by Side Refrigerator
We cleaned it all out and there was a thick sheet of ice on freezer waiting for it to all defrost. We used a hair dryer but there is still ice behind the shield
Keep going with the hairdryer till all ice melted off. do not point dryer at any stats.
ice should not build up. check heater and thermal cutout in series with heater for a start. you may also have the return air duct frozen as well and this is usually hidden behind the evaporator. safest way to deal with this is to turn off and leave for a day with doors open

You have an automatic defost malfunction. There is a timer (or circuit board) which controls the run and defost modes of your refrigerator. Once in defost, there is a heater that comes on to melt frost behind back panel. Once a certain temperature is reached behind the panel, a defost thermostat (or bi-metal) cuts off the heater. This maintains your frost-free operation.
