Restore the file by using the Windows Recovery Console
Use the Windows Recovery Console to expand pic.sy_ from the I386 folder on the Windows CD to the \%windows\system32\drivers folder on the hard drive.
1. Start the computer to the recovery Console
a. Insert the Windows Startup disk into the CD-ROM drive. Restart the computer.
b. Click any options that you have to start the computer from CD-ROM drive.
c. Press “R” to repair windows installations.
d. Press “C” to start the Recovery Console.
e. Type the number that corresponds to the Windows Installation that you want, and then press ENTER.
f. Type the local administrator password, and press ENTER.
g. At the Recovery Console prompt, type “MAP” and then press ENTER, note the drive letter that is assigned to the CD-ROM drive.
h. Type the following at the command prompt, and press ENTER
Expand drive:\i386\pci.sy_ c:\winnt\system32\drivers /y
Expand drive:\i386\pci.sy_ c:\windows\system32\drivers /y
(drive is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.)
g. type exit and then press ENTER to quite the recovery Console
h. Restart Windows in the normal manner.

This is you have to do:

Insert the Windows setup CD into the CD-ROM, and restart the computer.

Hit enter, when the screen display “loading form CD…..”

Let the program run through to the end.

When it stopped, hit “R” , that will bring to the Recovery Console

Select the “1” , I assume that you have only one Operating System.

Type in administrators’ password. The default password is “Admin” or “administrator”

If all is correct, you will see a c:\ prompt.

Type map at the c:\ and hit ENTER

    Note the drive letter

Type in the follow command at c:\

    Expand e:\i386\pci.sy_ c:\windows\sytem32\drivers /y

Note: e: is the CD-ROM drive

There is a space between the sy_ and c:\

And a space between the drivers and /y

Where the “Type exit and then press ENTER to quite the Recovery Console” appear

Type exit and remove the CD from the CD-ROM and restart the PC.

    Since it is a laptop.

it is hard to check the hard driver with another laptop.

you may able to take it a repiar shop, and have them check the hard drive, before you go out and buy one.

    it is your call.

    good luck

Can you log into windows normally?
If not, you may need to install windows from the beggining.
In case that windows work fine & the problem is just with system files, you can follow these steps:
1- From Start Menu choose "Run"
3- Press Enter & insert the windows XP cd when asked, then click continue or restart as the window tells you.

This should help you repair almost every problem in th systm folder.
Hope it works.
