I can't guarantee that this is your problem, but I do know that Data Execution Prevention does affect how Windows Movie maker compiles data. If you want to try and see it this is the case here is how to diable it.

Disable DEP
goto
accessories
right click command prompt
run as admin
type
bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff
hit enter

Hope this helps

VDR M50 drivers for Windows Vista Ultimate

plug the camera in via usb so the camera shows up as a removeable drive. if it picks up the camera as a DVD burner instead of drive, install the DVD-RAM drivers (in compatibility mode for XP SP2 w/ administrative privileges if necessary) and browse the contents of the disc - copy and paste the VRO file to your hard drive and rename it as an mpg - should be readable at that point. good luck.

Importing movie onto PC with Vista

I think you should install a software program that has the capability of opening mov file. This would become a plug-in for other programs and enable them to interpret it as mov file. or click on your movie file from camera and change its properties to be opened by a certain software that can open mov file and use it as the default program to open that file.

JVC mini DV.. video upload

I've got the same camera and I use "Windows Movie Maker" to transfer my recordings to DVD's. The program came with Windows Vista, but you may be able to download it from Microsoft.com .
There's another program that also came with Windows Vista Home Premium. It's "Muvee Auto Producer 5.0" and YES! I realize that's not how to spell "MOVIE", that's how they spell it. Anyway, although I haven't used it yet, it will transfer your home movies to DVD or you can save them to the hard drive. I prefer the "Movie Maker". It's pretty easy and it has some pretty neat features. You'll like it too. Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with. I know how you feel! I was in the same boat as you, when I first got that camera...NO WAY TO SAVE MY HOME MOVIES AND COULDN'T FIND ANYONE TO TELL ME HOW TO DO IT OR WHAT SOFTWARE TO GET.
Just so you know, everything you need, to do what you're wanting to do...I already installed and ready to go in the "HP Pavilion a1710n", including the FireWire Port. Or, you could get Windows Vista Home Premium...but I don't care for it myself.
Good Luck To You,
Bill

DOWNLOADING FROM CAMERA TO COMPUTER

Digital Video (DV) camcorders use a small port, usually located underneath the LCD flip-out screen, or behind a small plastic cover on the camera's body. My Canon has it on the front under the microphone. A special cable is required to plug into this port, and then into either the computer's USB or Firewire port. The camera is turned on, plugged in and Windows XP/Vista will offer to import the footage.
Analog (8MM, Hi-8, VHS-C) use a cable that has a headphone type plug on one end and audio/video RCA plugs on the other. These camcorders require you to equip the computer with a video capture device.
Without knowing the model of the camcorder, it is impossible to give any additional information. The operating system you are using would also be helpful information.
