Question about Nikon Digital Cameras

1 Answer

I have a Nikon D40 which is coming upto being two years old. Recently I have noticed that the auto-focus will not work. If I manually focus I can still take photos but when auto is engaged it will not even try to focus and therefore will not allow me to take a photo. I have not made any changes to the settings and therefore I am concerned it is a hardware fault. The lens in question is the standard lens supplied with the camera and is the only lens I have so have been unable to check this with any other equipment. Any guidance would be grately appreciated. Kind regards Jeff

The auto motor and most of the electronics for focusing are located inside the lens on this model and the camera communicates with the body via interface contacts. Try cleaning these first. If you do not get auto focus function back the lens will need to be looked at as I think the aotofocus motor or something on the board needs attention. I would also get a quote for a replacement lens since repairs may cost same as or more than buying a new lens.

Nikon D40 vertical focus problem

Make sure the camera is using the appropriate focus sensor.

Does the problem occur when you focus manually?

Are you handholding the camera? Many people don't hold the camera as steady when holding it vertically. Try putting the camera on a tripod or other steady surface and see what happens.

I have nikon d40, on continuous mode, auto, it doesn't shoot continuously. also, most of the time, it focuses but not shooting... please help.

I don't know what you are doing - mine shoots continuously with no problems. There is nothing to set other than to set the shooting mode.
I have noticed that some memory cards are so slow it doesn't allow continuous mode. I recently replaced mince ith 16G class 6 cards and they work fine.

The G series lenses won't work in AF mode on the newer, entry-level Nikons. They require the DX series.

Nikon D40 help?!

I assume the lens had the impact. The 18-55 lens has the built-in motors for auto-focus.
Try switching to manual focus (on the lens). If this works, the lens may not auto-focus anymore.
Try it and let me know.
cheers,

Nikon d40 digital camera

When the camera is in auto focus mode, it will not take the picture until it locks onto a subject. If there is not enough light, the camera will "hunt" for something to focus on. Since it can't define any edges, it won't allow the shutter to release.

The D40 base model does NOT have a powered focus lever for autofocus, so if the autofocus is not working, suspect the lens.
