Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
Try this:
Click the Start button, press run and type regedit.
Turn the computer OFF and go to the BIOS to check if the DVD drive is still detected.
Try to remove the dvd drive then plug it back in. That should automatically place it back.
Try first removing the battery and unplugging power cable for temn minutes.
If there is a disk inside the dvd remove it.
Try extracting the DVD drive and putting it back in place.
Try first removing the battery and unplugging power cable for ten minutes.
If there is a disk inside the dvd remove it.
Try extracting the DVD drive and putting it back in place.
Try doing a system restore, here you get instructions for XP, Vista is similar: How to perform System Restore on Windows...
If all this does not work go to the bios at startup and check if the DVD is detected.
If DVD is not detected in Bios, then you need to replace the DVD drive unit.
IF DVD is detected in bios, then you need to reinstall windows.

windows cant find the operating system
One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive
Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA
the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electic extensions or just replace them they are probably faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error hope this helps

I do not feel qualified to attempt removing the disc drive from my laptop. Can a solution not be found via the keyboard.
The integral dvd drive icon has dissapeared from the 'my computer' page of my Toshiba 'Satellelite' laptop running Vista 32bit operating system. Ginko suggests removing and replacing the drive, but I do not feel happy trying to dismantel my lap top. Any other ideas please, perhaps via the keyboard. Thanks B.Cook
Icon has now reappeared after removing battery and power for 10 minutes. Many thanks, Brian Cook
