Can not find a breaker switch or any other mechanical option to reactivate camera. Purchased it about a year ago for xmass presant for wife. She is an RN and familar with sensitive electronic devices.
If the product is within the year, warranty would apply especially when you consider cost for out of warranty repair. From your description the problem is more likely the systems control board, "the brains of the camera"

I had the same problem and i called up cutomer support on 1300 659 678 (Australia) and they said that the problem may lie in your batteries. It was advised that you use Lithium batteries, and to avoid use of Alkaline, since they dont have the required power to operate the camera which is why it turns off right away. As to what type of rechageable batterires to use i am not sure, i think it was Nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries. Hope this solves your problem.

You didn't say what type of batteries you are using. Best are CR-V3 lithium which should give 500 shots. 2300 mAh Ni-MH rechargeable batteries should give 200 shots. Worst are alkalines which Olympus do not recommend.
Have you checked the contacts in the bottom of the battery chamber for cleanliness?
