Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have laptop with XP PRO and have AOL as my main source of internet in the UK. I am currently in Cyprus and the hotel has provided me with Username and password to access their internet. My wireless broadcom make good strong connection, however as I am not provided with a WEP key, I am informed that I need to click on internet explorer and will then be asked for Username and password. Internet explorer does not open, is this because AOL is my main source of internet exploring?. However it worth pointing out in my office in Cyprus, Internet explorer and AOL work perfectly. Any suggestions or explanation

Sorry for the delay broadband access still very limited, I was unable to perform the instructions provided as my computer tells me it is using explorere as default, but does not provide me the option to change as this section is greyed out. However my real problem is how do I connect to internet in my hotel with a password and username, should this be entered on the explorer page, because if that is the case I am not getting this page to open up in my Hotel. Again as mentined earlier it all works great at work, but not in Hotel ?

Sometimes other programs, such as Firefox and AOL, can accidentally be set to your default internet browser. This is how to change it back to Internet Explorer on Windows XP.
[edit] Steps

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Go to Tools > Internet Options
  3. Click to the Programs tab
  4. Click Reset Web Settings
  5. When the pop-up menu comes up, select Yes.
  6. Another method that does reset all your other options:
  7. Open Control Panel and double-click Internet Options.
  8. Click the Programs tab.
  9. Click to select the Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser check box.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Start Internet Explorer and when you are prompted to make it the default browser, click Yes.

What do I need to use the internet when I visit france on holiday/with my laptop.

Many hotels in Europe offer free WiFi connections and the hotels will provide you with the necessary sign-on information when you check in.

Your computer should automatically find the connection then all you have to do is sign on with the information the hotel provided.

In addition, many hotels also have business centers where free computers are available which provide instant access to the internet. In those cases I recommend using the hotel computer to protect information that you have on your laptop.

Hacking is a major problem in Europe and often hackers will have locked onto your computer within seconds after you have logged in...especially on public WiFi networks.

This can and does happen even on "secure" sites. You need to be aware of this and avoid accessing any websites where you have confidential information.

Once you return from France, I would suggest running an immediate full system anti-virus scan and I would change all of the passwords in all of the accounts I accessed while I was away.

Can I send an email to my daughters orange phone from my PC and would I use her hotmail address or can I use her mobile number with say @orange.co.uk

If your daughter has a wap or Internet-enabled phone, using Orange World is one of the easiest ways for her to access her webmail.

There’s nothing she needs to set up. She'll simply open Orange World on her Orange phone, go to “Tools”, then “Read your email” and finally select her email provider.

She'll then be taken to her email provider’s wap site. From there it’s just like logging on to your email with a web browser.

What does she need?
  • A wap or Internet-enabled Orange phone
  • A compatible email address (see list of providers)
  • To use this service you’ll need an email provider who has a wap site. Currently you can use this service with the following email providers:
*Currently, Hotmail only works with a limited number of handsets.
Set up
Easy. Open up Orange World on her phone, go to “Tools”, then “Read your email” then select your email provider.

You'll send an email from your computer to her email account. She can then read it on her phone.

If this information was helpful, please give me a big thumbs-up when you rate my answer. Thank you.

My laptop will connect with the internet though a home router. At a hotel or airport it will not connect with the internet service provided by these places. What is wrong

More information needed:
Does your laptop have a wireless adapter?
How do you connect at home? (wireles or ethernet cable?)
What brand of laptop do you have?
What troubleshooting steps have you already taken?

For your information, when away from your home network, you must change your wireless settings to point to the hotel or airport provider where you are trying to connect.

Usually hotels have some contact information and some basic support (some better than others) for their wireless connections.

Internet connection for vista

unfortunately, there is nothing that you can copy and transfer from your XP based desktop. The best solution is to call your provider and ask them for a Vista driver update for your usb modem.

Hope this helps.
