I have several Datamax printers and are used for label printing throughout the warehouse, the problem we have is that printer stays in a send mode, to get it going again, we have to cycle the printers again, ie., power the printer off, then end and restart the writers again on the AS400, any ideas.

If you are changing length(feed length) you may have to recalibrate the printer . Also ensure that your print format is the correct length for the stock. You can look at the setup of the printer using the datamax-oneil printer configutation program, or if it is using IP connection, you can go directly to the internal web page for set up. make the cal length 3 times the label length, or leave at the default value.
Do you have Zebra emulation firmware installed? If not, your printer will not understand the command language that you are sending to it. Datamax has its own language and you will need a branch in your code to support that if the printer does not work with ZPL.
Using direct thermal labels it can dirt the printhead and platen roller, you must clean them with isopropyl alcohol and a flannel. Also adjust the darkness to less value to best print. Roberto Martinez

Check to see that the label sensor is over the gap in the label. It is just under the head on the right hand side.
You might also have the unit configured incorectly. If you go to the Datamax site, you can download the printer config program, It is easier to use than trying to push the buttons in the correct order to configure the printer.
Also use at least a 6" long label, and print the config file to see if you are set correctly for gap mode if using die cut stock.
