Question about Dell 5100cn Laser Printer

1 Answer

56Tbird Dear Cory, I appreciate your help with the 5100cn printer problem. I hope the Magenta developer fixes my problem. I know that I can buy a new color laser for around $350, however consumables are always a questoin and the Dell 5100cn preforms well in this area. I hope this fix buys me at least another year. I would greatly appreciate the .pdf instruction file you have created. If you have time please send the file to Again, thanks for all your help. 56Tbird

Not a problem at all.

This should fix your issue. I won't say it is a common failure, as the machine overall is very reliable, however for this problem the magenta developer is the most common failure for the 5100 and 5110.

Pages come out pink only when printing in colore

The magenta developer is bad.

The developer drive on this printer rotates in both a clockwise and a counter clockwise direction to turn the developers.

When printing black, ( i cant remember which direction it turns, ) only the black developer turns.

When printing color, the developer drive turns the opposite direction, engaging ALL 4 developers.

( the developers are the multi colored bars you see when you remove the image drum unit.)

This is why you do not get the pink output when printing only black.

your choices are to set the printer to only print black and white. ( you can do this in the printer properties for your print driver). or you will need to replace the magenta developer.

My dell 5100cn printer is not printing red tones at all. Everything comes out in green tones. Has new toner cartridges and drum. What can I do?

The M6090 Magenta Developer is failing. It has lost it's magnetism. So the toner isn't ready to be transferred.

The Cyan Developer G6593 or Yellow Developer H6682 may be failing too, because it can't dependably hold all it's toner. One of those is probably bad too.

Magenta color on all pictures

Normal 0 Could have a corrupt driver.
Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do both and when the CD software program asks you to connect the printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud

Dell 5100cn Black Developer Unit

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

You are right. The procedure was initially posted by Corysf62 on this problem. Excerpt from that post:
  • "The photo developers are located behind the imaging drum. you can see the 4 seperate developers, in the developer frame, when you remove the drum unit...You need to remove the top cover, the left side cover, the high voltage power supply, the supply tubes ( where the toner travels from the actual toner cartridges down to the developers ). Then once the tubes are removed, you have to remove the developer frame from the printer. Then you can get to the actual photo developer."
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Dell 5100cn - Magenta color on all prints

Hi 56tbird.

The answer you got from Dell was partially correct.

It is the Magenta Developer that is causing your problem, however, you can replace this part for less then the printer if you do the work yourself.

I have successfully instructed other on replacing the developer units, although you will have to procure the part.

This is one of the 4 color assemblies you see when you remove the imaging drum.

The part number for the Magenta Developer is M6090

The first thing to do is price the part. I usually suggest doing a google search for the part number. you will find many resellers that way.

you might also try a search on Ebay for the part number as well.

If you decide to purchase the part, if you somewhat mechanically inclined, you should be able to replace the part without a problem.

I can give you detailed instructions on how to change the developer if you decide to go that route.

Dell 5100 Magenta

Hi Paul,

I don't mind the direct email at all.

The corkscrew in the tube is actually there to feed toner from the toner cartridges through the tube, to the developer itself.

Unlike some other model printers, where the toner and photodeveloper are all in one housing, the 5100 toners are just that, toner cartridges that feed toner. You will never fix a print quality issue on the 5100 by changing toners unless the toner is empty.

now the question here is whether or not you disconnected the spring from the motor that actually turns it and causes it to churn the toner. If it is not connected, then you will never draw toner down the tube into the developer assembly.

I most cases, the developer will be the cause of the problem when you have tinting, streaking, or even missing colors.

if you disassembled the printer far enough to get to the tubes that plug into the developer frame, you were almost to the point you need to get to to remove the developer frame from the printer.

all you have to do is remove all 4 hoses, the single electical connector at the top of the frame, and then the frame will pull lose from the printer.

If you do remove it, take care to keep the frame upright or you will spill toner from all 4 developers.

This is the unit you should inspect to make sure it can turn freely, after it is removed from the frame.

there are only 2 clips, one on each side of each developer assembly that hold it to the frame. If you remove the Magenta developer, make sure that you can turn the gear. it should be firm, but not tight.

If you do remove the developer frame, make sure you clean the ROS glass. This is actually the printhead, located behind the frame when removed, so be careful.

only wipe with a soft lint free cloth, and only wipe in one direction to prevent smearing. Do this before reinstalling the developer frame.

Once you are reassembled ( if you changed the magenta or not ), make sure you go into Maintenance, and developer cleaning, and then clean each developer. Be careful not to touch the HVPS, but try to do this with the top cover off so you can see if the spring in EACH tube actually churns the toner while cleaning.

Feel Free to write again to comment or just let me know how you did.

Color Faded

This sounds like a typical Developer Drive failure. The Developer Drive for color is different that the black developer drive. This is why black can print fine, but colors are faint or non existant. see below,a recent bullitin about this exact issue from Dell. ( the ROS, is the printhead, and is located behind the 4 developers.

5100cn Printer
Print Quality Issue
1. Problem: - Color images are extremely faint or not produced, but black images are produced without any problem.
Resolution: - Replace Developer drive assembly (H6702) and clean ROS Window/Glass.
If you chose to persue this repair, you can probably find a replacement developer drive by doing either a google search for the part number listed ( H6702 ) or an ebay search for the same. We can also provide you with removal and replacement instructions.

Good Luck

1. Problem: - Magenta Streaking Issue.
Resolution: - Replace the drum (M6599) and the Magenta Developer (M6090)
More then likely this is caused by a defective magenta developer.

This is one of the 4 color assemblies you see when you remove the imaging drum.

The part number for the Magenta Developer is M6090

This is a very involved repair, and although i have actually instructed other how to change the part, it is only something you should attempt if you are somewhat mechanically inclined.

If you do get the part and wish to change it yourself, I can forward you the detailed instructions on how to remove and replace it.

Dell 5100cn

I am going to answer this even though there was no reply to my clarification report.

No, it is not a HVPS problem. This is a magenta developer problem. The magenta developer for some reason has the highest failure rate of all the developers, including black. Perhaps because there are more shades of magenta in color prints.

Since you changed the toner, we can assume you are not out of magenta, but it is possible that you did not run a developer cleaning in the maintenance mode on the magenta developer.

If the magenta toner had been allowed to run out all of the way, a developer cleaning would allow the toner auger to move fresh toner from the toner dispenser, through the feed tube, into the developer.

If you have run the developer cleaning, and you can see that there is magena toner on the magenta developer ( for clarification, the developers are located behind the imaging drum. remove the drum to expose the 4 developers ), then the developer itself is defective.

Good luck.

Magenta colour comes through on all prints right across the page, it is faded but is still clearly there. I can temporarily fix problem by using the printer menu to clean the magenta developer, but it...

We have over 50 of these printers and a few have had the magenta bleeding problem. On everyone of them the problem was corrected by going to the clean developer function under Maintenence from the Menu and choosing to clean the magenta color. Usually have to run it a couple times but it has always corrected the problem so far.
