I just bought a 1996 Vulcan and it needs a new starter, Well i removed the starter and the gears are bad , i believe this is a drive gear, can someone help me? I need to know what the gear is called? and how hard it is to replace it. The new starter would not grab the gear and will not start. Its the gear the starter connects to, to turn over the motor

The gears ARE probably fine. The problem is a slightly bent shift fork. Since the engine is apart I would STRONGLY advise you replace the shift fork. If nothing else it is cheap insurance that you won't have to replace it four weeks later because it won't shift into first. I have replaced shift forks that looked perfectly good but were bent such the you couldn't get into 2nd gear. Looks can be deceiving.
SOURCE: Any way to adjust the rear shocks on a 1996 vulcan 1500-a10 ?
on the bottom chrome band there are like four holes. in your tool kit there is a "thing-a-ma-gidgette" (i call it this because it looks like one, it is actually a "spoke wrench"). the tail of the spoke wrench will fit in the 4 holes Righty tighty so it feels weird: one side you are turning towards the front one side towards the back.

only two things going on here, first the clutch is out of adjustment, no enough free play, the next is the clutch plates and springs need replacing.

Is there gas? Is the petcock on? Are you getting gas to the carbs? Are you getting spark? If yes to all these then you may have timing issues.
