Hi I have the 42 inch Sony Bravia in my bedroom. The picture upstairs in the bedroom is too big for the tv if that makes sense.

Hello. It's not a picture setting, it's a format, or picture size setting. Look for a button on the remote labeled Format, or Size, or Zoom, or something similar. You want to select 16:9, or Full, or whatever fills the screen without zooming.

How to decrease the width of the tv screen

I am not familiar with your particular TV but I have sets from 3 different makers that all handle the problem you describe a little differently via the remote provided with the TV. One uses a Format button that allows you to go through each picture type as you press the button until you find the one you like best. Another has a Pic Size button that uses a pop-up menu that allows you to use the arrow keys to scroll through each type. The last one and most limited in choices requires you to go into the Menu from the remote and make changes through Settings or Setup to change the picture. Hopefully this may help.

If you are using a cabe or satelite box these units also have picture format button, if so then consider setting the televisions remote screen format to normal, and us the box's remote to change formats especially if you are watching in HD.

The tv screen is zoomed in. how do i get it back to normal?

On most remotes, there should be a button that says SCREEN MODE, VIEW MODE, PIC MODE, or DISPLAY MODE. Keep pressing that button on the remote to change to different modes. If you have trouble finding the right button, tell me your TV model number so I can look up the picture of the factory remote.
