Re: system unable to find hard disk
What kind of laptop do you have? how mutch memory do u have? XP can be very very hard to instal on old laptops with smal memorys.
Download the program "memtest from http://www.memtest.org and check your memosticks Did u change the settings so your laptop starts from cd-driver and not from your harddisk? You should been able to start the instalation even if u cant complete it if you are short of memory
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Do you want to replaced the main HD or add a new one? If you want to replace the main one, buy a Hard drive under 160 gigs. I cant remember but 98 can not deal with a bigger one, you will have to cut it up or Partition it. Partition it down to 20 gig each. Do you have your Org. win 98 install disk? Get a setup program with the HD you buy. That program should let you Partition it and also format it to use with 98 or fat32. Once installed in the computer set the HD to master with switches located on the drive (small jumpers) As it boots up look for press DEL to enter setup. Get into the BIOS program and ck to see it it will locate your new hard drive you might have to set heads and scetors so make a note of the stamped on the drive. Once the BIOS has found the drive it is a matter of format w/ copy the command comm program from win98 you will have to have a good win 98 set up disk. Once you have formated the drive with fat32 and copied commamd.com you will need to install CD/Rom drivers you might have to find a good old win98 starup disk to boot up the cd. you might find a good old floppy with a cd intall on it at a local computer shop. if using an old win98 startup disk you can then put in the cd and at the Prompt type in cd win98 then type in setup and that should be a good start.
its domnickr, its so we can not install xp in model 1255 it will spoils your hard disk all you can install win98 ED 2 only..... so its wise not to try it and reinstall using win 98 install disk. if format is not possible do format using Fdisk command. step 1 :enter dos floppy restart ur lap enter from insulation option. chance boot perority to floppy disk ie Shift +. restart lap enter fdisk in commant format using instruction for any help mail at email@example.com
Simple problem you made the partions using FAT 16 file system and 80 GB cannot be partition using win98 10 will limit the disk to 10 GB.
Remove all Partions And Use Windows XP to create partition during Installion.
If you did the install by formatting C drive, it was a clean install and all other data from Win 98 will be gone. Also XP uses NTFS rather than only FAT. It becomes a real mess when you try to install XP over 98 without starting on a clean slate.
Right well XP Pro really MUST be formatted with NTFS only...
I suggest you get a third party partitioning program like Partition magic and completely remove the partition & redo it all again & this time Format NTFS.
Or if ya have a WIN98 boot disk, and ya can use FDISK, Delete ALL partitions, and remake them again, using all the disk space, then format as NTFS, then proceed as below
Then using your windows XP PRO setup Disk, start the install ...then when asked about where you want the install located, select C & REFORMAT it AGAIN with the windows setup using again NTFS file system... this should finish & then the Install should "see" your entire hard drive and format it accordingly and then when finished you can proceede to install XP.
This is a little difficult but it can B done :) Firstly I dunno if ya need to re-format ya drive? perhaps first ya could try to "Repair" of Win98? If that doesn't work, then, perhaps ya may have to re-format. If the Win98 is on a SEPARATE drive or Partition this also makes a difference....
Basically ... repair/re-install win98, then do a repair of ya Boot menu for XP, as Win98 sets up an incorrect Boot up for XP, and thus must be "Fixed" so XP will boot & show a Dual boot menu..
