Hi,
It sounds as if you have a screw loose !
No, really - I believe there is a screw, nail or other large object in the drum or near the filter that needs to be found and removed.
The small particles you describe are probably pieces of plastic from the drum or pump body that have been chipped off. If left untreated, can lead to a big hole and expensive replacement.
Please empty and strip the pump pipework to check for nails etc, and check in base of drum.
I have been out to several with a hole clean through the drum caused by nails.
