Center Column is getting Hot

The column/divider between the freezer and refrigerator sides is hot to the touch on the front. This is getting so hot, the magnets in the weatherstripping on the doors are getting hot, too. I am worried the whole thing is about to crash on us, fully loaded with food. We do need to change the filter, the light has been on for a couple weeks. What runs through the center colunm/divider?

The center bar is getting very hot to the touch. Cleaned the the coils and it still gets hot. Placed a lttle fan behind the frig witht the back pannel off and this fixs the hot center bar.

I checked the back and the little fan over the tray is not truning. But I have read its probably the condenser fan and I think this i not the fan I need to change.

What fan do I change is my question?

    Thanks in advance.

Center front and side front panel of freezer door is extreamly hot, the rubber seal on the doors are warm to touch and it smells hot. Before this, it was making a weired noise. I've pulled it out and took bottom panel in back off and noticed that the fan is trying to turn but is not and everything in the area is hot.

Divider between freezer and refrigerator is very hot.

  • bluetrail Aug 03, 2008

Back in March 08 i reported on this site problems of the center divider getting hot on my side by side. I cleaned the coils with vacuum and refrigerator temp came down but only 1 or 2 degrees. The problem was the main board. Fortunately, i had the extended 5yr warraty and called GE service and tech said it was the mainboard just based on my description of the problem. He order the mainboard and replaced it as simple as replacing a bulb and all has been working perfect. This is the reason for waiting this long to post this to be sure that this was the problem. Now the divider is cool all the time. The mainboard was priced at $204. So im glad i had the extended warranty which only cost me $59. for 5yrs in 2003. This can be done yourself if you are handy specially with computers. Hope this helps anyone running into this problem with the overheating center column on side-by-sides.

my answer to the problem was solution 5. when the center divider was getting hot on my side by side. i thought that i was going to have to cuff up a grand or so for a new fridge . i read the solutions and thought that maybe the mother board went out, but then i went ahead and vacuum the coil on the front it was really dirty and had a lot of lint on it. then i read solution 5 and i thought it was silly since i live in phoenix az and there is hardly any mice here. but my wife told me that she thought she saw a mouse come in the the house when the garage was open the previous day. so i took the back cover off the back of the fridge just to check if the fan was working i guess what there was a mouse jammed on the blade of the fan. sure enough i pulled it off and the fan immediately began working again.so it didnt cost me a dime and i cougt the mouse that snuck in my house while the garage door was open.

The light for the filter is not a problem. The thing to check is that the fan in the back is running. It should run any time the compressor is running to cool the compressor. If it is, then you need to pull the front grille or toe kick off and look under the fridge. Is there a lot of dust and dirt blocking the airflow? If so, vacuum it out. If not, pull the fridge out and check behind it. Is there a grate clogged up with dust? The reason the divider gets hot is because there is a freon line running through that part of the fridge to keep moisture from forming around the door seals. If the fridge is not cooling properly (dead fan motor or dirt blocked airflow) then the freon in this line gets very hot and all the pressures in the system rise, eventually leading to the fridge not cooling. Good Luck !

My side by side divider/column was getting really hot to the touch. The freezer temp was at 8 degrees and climbing. Vacuumed the front grill but not much space to clean. Pulled out the refrigerator and there was all this lint clogging the grill where the compressor and fan was. Took the grill off and clean compressor, and the whole area was dirty. Before moving it back i checked the temp. and had begun to come down and the hot spot was not hot anymore. I will mark on my calendar to make it routine to clean it Spring and Fall. After all it's been 4 yrs. since I got it and my fear was scratching the wood floor under it so i procrastinated finally the husband gave me a hand with it. Thanks for having this info available. It saved me some money$$$.

I confirmed the fan explanation. When I took the back off to check the fan, there was a small mouse jammed in the fan blades. Once this was removed, the fan ran fine, and in an hour or so, the temps went back to normal. This is an Electrolux Icon model. Works great.

Side by side divider was getting "VERY HOT". After reading all the postings from this web site, I was almost positive it was the mother board. But not taking a chance I call GE, who sent out a repair man. Sure enough, it was the mother board. Repair man said that it could only be one of three thing wrong. 1). Something is jamming the fan from spinning (like a mouse). 2). The fan motor (which he said, these motors never break). 3). The mother board is bad (which was the case with me). Repair man said of the many repairs of this nature its almost always the mother board. He has yet had to replace a fan motor. Mother boards are easy to replace and come with instructions. So save yourself a ton of money and buy and install the board yourself. My repair bill was over $400. The mother board will cost you approx. $140.00. Good luck

I was amazed at the accuracy of Solution #5. There was a red backed vole, the size of a small mouse, stuck in our fan. That makes our refrigerator a very expensive mouse trap. They should engineer a little hole for mice to get past the baffle holding the fan. Center Column is getting Hot - 11453fe.jpg

The divider between the freezer and refrig is very hot to touch.

Normal for that strip to be warm since the cooling system is routed right behind it for heat transfer and to eliminate condensation. Will be warmer with increase in room temp, but if it is a significant change you should inspect/clean the coils behind the panel in the rear of the unit.

Center Column is getting Hot

check the condenser fan motor to see that the one that you changed is running in the right direction some run clockwise some run counter clockwise
if it is the right direction check the condenser for lint buildup
and if needed clean the coil
also check the evaperator for an ice and frost build up that can ocurr when the condenser fan goes bad
normaly the buildup of ice or frost will be on the top of the evaperator coil
just use a hair dryer to remove if needed dont pull on the ice if found or use a screwdriver or knife heat only to melt

You should be able to see the fan spinning if you look under the frige with a flashlight to the back or feel air flow (tissue paper helps) coming from underneath it. As for the center column, if you mean the divider area between sides, that being real hot means the compressor refrigerant is overheated. It should be warm to touch not hot. Sounds like your condensor fan is out or packed full of dust bunnies and not spinning. The compressor will overheat and "trip" the thermal overload on and off so you do need that cooling fan. All the underside of the frige needs to be clean and clear of hair, pet fuzz, etc. in order to cool properly. The fan is likely out of warranty but they are cheap and easy to replace by a homeowner.
