OK, THANKS FOR THE INFO SO FAR. NEXT I NEED TO KNOW THIS. IN THE QUICK LAUNCH TASKBAR IN THE LOWER RIGHT HAND CORNER OF YOUR SCREEN YOU WILL SEE A MONITOR. WHEN YOU PUT THE CURSOR OVER IT, IT SHOULD GIVE YOU SOME INFO LIKE THIS: CURRENTLY CONNECTED TO: THE NAME OF YOUR CONNECTION, THEN UNDER THAT IT WILL SAY ACCESS: AND THIS IS WHAT I NEED TO KNOW! IT SHOULD SAY:LOCAL AND INTERNET! AND GIVE A STRENGTH METER! IF IT DOESN'T, THIS IS WHERE WE HAVE THE PROBLEM! SO, DO THIS AND REPLY TO: ARCLIGHT1217, THANKS!

In the run window type cmd. This will open up your command prompt. Type ping google. com. If you get a message saying all packets went thru you are connected and your DNS server is working correctly. If it says they all timed out. try typing ping 1.0.0.0 If this goes thru and all packets where recieved then your DNS server is broke. I do not know a way to fix this. But at least you would know the problem.

It connects to local networks but not the internet

You don't say whether you are trying to connect via an ethernet cable, or via a wireless connection.
Try the following in order: Some of these may seem obvious, but it helps eliminate the more simple problems first: (general guidance, as I'm not sure which windows version you are working with. Did you upgrade from Vista to Win 7?)

Assume you have enabled the network on the laptop FN + number key or physical switch?

  • Check if you have the Ethernet and wireless drivers for this laptop first from the Toshiba support site and install them
  • In Control panel / device manager, see that the network devices for wireless and Ethernet Lan are appearing and have no warning mark next to them. If they have, you need to check what the problem is by clicking on the device shown and following the instructions given (repost your findings if you need more help)
  • See if you can connect to the internet using the ethernet lan connection cable (direct wired connection). If it does this ok, the problem lies with the wireless connection.
  • Assuming the wireless card in the laptop is present and is functioning, the next step is to check the router settings. Using the supplied CD that came with the router, or clicking on the router symbol in control panel / network and open the wireless security settings page, reset the wireless password and make a note of it. Save settings. When setting security, choose 128 bit security for more safety.
  • See if the laptop now picks up the network and when prompted enter the password you just created. If this works you are finished.
  • If it still does not work, try disabling Windows Firewall ( a common problem) and see if that then allows for connection.
  • If it STILL fails to work, try the laptop on a friends network. If it connects then, the problem is with your router. If it does not work, you have a failing wireless card in the laptop.
To confirm this, obtain a USB network dongle and test it on your laptop with your own network. You can get a replacement card off the likes off eBay and this is not difficult to fit.

My wifi is not connecting automatically

Hi benchbnr75,
I see that you want your Wifi or Wireless to connect automatically, I believe that you have a Network at home.
To begin setting your Laptop to connect automatically to your Network follow the steps below.
  • Click on start, click on Control Panel in Control Panel upper right hand side look for view by: then click on the drop down and select small icons.
  • After selcting small icons you should see a screen with a bunch of icons, look for Network and Sharing Center.
  • In Network and Sharing Center you will see a window, see below image.
mvincentc_16.jpg

  • The yellow Highlighted portion is where Manage Wireless Networks will be, I just don't have wireless on my PC that is why it doesn't show.
  • Once you click on the Manage Wireless Networks you will be on a different page, and you will see a list of the networks that your Laptops has for Internet connection select the Wireless Network that you connect to double left click on it then click next it will open a window for that Network, you will see boxes on that window put a check on the one that say automatically connect to this network when in range.
  • After doing the above instructions click on Apply or OK if you have any of the 2 then you will be set on the issue, the next time you restart your wireless will connect automatically.
I hope that I have given you enough information regarding your concern, have a nice day.
Thanks.

I have a new dell 1545. I was able to connect to the internet for the first few days. I have bought a linksys usb that has given me an extra bar for signal. I have installed a netgear router which has...

Try linking your ethernet cable from your router to your notebook. If it allows you to connect via ethernet port, it definitly your wireless.

1st go into control panel, then Network and settings, then Manage wireless networks. Remove all other wireless networks on your computer apart from the one you are trying to connect to.

Once this is done, Go back to your control panel, Network and internet, then click connect to a network. Disconnect from the network you are connected to and then reconnect. This should solve your problem, please let me know how you get on and if you need any further assistance, please rate it this was of any help, thanks

I have an aspire 3680, how do I connect wireless? It has a wireless card, I just dont know how to make it connect.

You should have a wireless configuration tool (there is one built in to Windows). You will need to know the SSID, encryption type, and passphrase for the network you are trying to log on to. Enter that information into the configuration tool and you should be fine.

Wireless connection problem

Hi,
if you are sure you didn't changed the password on the wifi router and it stopped working itself try restoring the system to the date it was working fine, but little caution all the settings/ programs installed after the restore date will be lost

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
choose the date ie. bold and on which it was working fine and follow instructions

if you think the info given by me was helpful please do rate me

Reinsalled windows xp on toshiba notebook -- now wireless won't work.

Hi Matt,

When you try to connect wirelessly to your network did get any pop up message like asking you for a network key WPA/WEP? if your wireless network is security enabled then you need to enter the security settings again on the computer since you re-installed XP the security settings that was saved previously was also wiped out.
May I know the exact model number of wireless router/access point that your trying to connect your laptop so that I can provide you with instructions on how to retrieve the security key.

Wireless

1) A working WiFi adapter, USB or PCMCIA.
2) A Wireless signal to connect to.

Windows already has built in WiFi software.
