Question about HP LaserJet 6L Printer

1 Answer

LaserJet 6L with Vista using Parallel to USB Cable

I've tried a number of ways to get HP LaserJet 6L to communicate with Vista. Spent over 3 hours with still no luck.
On the HP website, they indicate that Windows Update in Vista will have the driver built in.
My question is:
1. What port do you use or do you create a new one?

On some forums, people claim this can be done, but for still cannot get this to go.
I have even tried taking off 'bi-drectional' support - nothing.
Help !!!
This is a solid printer and it would be such a waste.
Using a Parallel to USB cable
Thanks

    I have older Dell Latitude laptop and use printers with parallel printer (HP Laserjet 4 & 5 and Oki). I have ordered a wireless parallel print server to allow wireless printing. I am now also considered buying a new laptop, but do not know if it will be
    Normal 0
    compatible with my HP Laserjet 4 printer, printing wired or wireless. I was told that the printer drivers for my HP Laserjet 4, etc. may not be
    Normal 0
    compatible with the Vista operating system. I do not want to ditch my current printers. What is one to do to get the older printers to work properly?

It can be done tested by Thoo personally 6L printer prints well on vista too
The printer end should be connected to 25 pin parallel cable, converted to the USB on the notebook end of the wiring
To solve your printing problems locate vista driver, since i have tested vista works fine on HP 6L printers
make sure you select the correct O/S and assign in to the USB virtual port 05

After installing my vista can print perfectly well on test printout

    You can tick back the bi-directional support thing, HP6L is actually converted from a waste to an asset if you listen to my advise, quote Thoo Wai Kiat

Usb to serial. will it work with a compaq laptop and an hp 6l printer?

Hello,

I think you mean usb to parallel....and the answer is maybe.

Usb to parallel adapters don't always work with all printers. Buy one from a store that will let you return it if it doesn't work. Make sure you install the drivers for the adapter as per the instructions that come with it.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Joe

Vista will not print to HP Laserjet 5p

I purchased a Dynex USB to Parallel Converter Cable from Best Buy and tried to connect but had no success. I then sent an email to Dynex customer service and received a reply in about 24 hours. The rep provided spot on instructions which I was able to follow to a tee. My 14 year old HP Laserjet 5P is now ready to run until it blows up.

I spent hours searching web forums and only received overcomplicated replies by people who think they are techies, none of which worked. I am 63 years old and not a techie, so if I can do it, anyone can. I have saved the email and will forward this straightforward simple fix to anyone who needs it. My net cost was $36.00 for the cable.

Problem with printing on HP 6L

Make sure the parallel port is enabled in 'setup' (bios) (make sure to exit and save even if no changes were made). If you are running 'Vista', you may need to update the driver from HP.

HP laserjet 4L parallel to usb vista Jumbled font on test page

You mentioned parallel usb. The HP4L only has parallel. Make sure you specify LPT1 as the port you want. Try reinstalling the driver. It should be in the list of drivers.

HP LaserJet II p Plus will not print

Hi,

I am assuming that you are using Vista. Based on your post/description:
1. the HP Compaq 6710b has no parallel port;
2. the HP LaserJet IIP Plus is only capable of either serial or parallel connection;
3. hence you're attempting a USB to Parallel interface;
4. the printer is installed in your notebook and is set to USB port;
5. from the printer a test print can be performed but not from the Printer Properties in your notebook;
6. all printing jobs initiated from the notebook results in an "Error".

With the above in mind, may I point/suggest that:
a. Windows Vista driver will only enable your HP LaserJet IIP Plus' basic functions to work. It is not 100% compatible;
b. alternately, you can try using the XP installation CD/drivers of the printer;
c. the compatibility issue may be compounded by the USB to parallel interface;
d. the USB to parallel interface may be hampered by a known Vista USB issue;
e. you can try patching/updating the Vista USB driver. Since this has been a recognized issue with Vista, Microsoft has posted a fix for this here or here.
f. verify that the printer does not display a 22 or 40 Error.

If the printing concern has not been rectified after completion of the above procedures, you may need to:
i. download and install HP Universal PostScript Print Driver; or
ii. consider using a wireless print server connected to the parallel port of the printer; or
iii.consider replacing your printer. Sorry.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

My HP LaserJet 6L Won't Print on new HP/Vista PC

Use any printer parallel 25pin convertor to USB cable and connect it to pc or notebook
Connect both ends from pc to 6L printer
Go to website to choose the correct O/S driver for installation
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=14974&lang=en&cc=us&taskId=135&prodClassId=-1&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=25476
Use virtual USB port005 for printer 6L
Bi-directional option can be ticked
Click apply and ok
Unplug and replug the USB cable
Try printing a test page,

I have tried it, the vista download drivers works on vista, no problems in printing at all, advise from http://www.bebo.com/andythoo
