If it is mechanical timer, you can locate the timer and turn it clock wise slowly until you hear a click and the compressor will stop as well as the fans. that is the defrosting mode.

if it is electronics, then there would be no manual defrost. it is either a board problem, defrost heater, or bi-metal thermostat.

Ge refrigerator top freezer is frosting over

Refrigerators that self defrost have three main components that cause defrost to take place. On your model GTH18ECC2RBB there is a WR55X10397 Defrost Control Board
e09a6ac4-8e1a-421f-a2da-14ff1c386c84.jpg

This part is most likely the problem and is found inside the fresh food compartment and inside the control panel. The location is 257 in this photo HERE Sometimes the defrost control board will show burn marks but not always. The other two parts that may be defective are the WR51X10038 Defrost Heater

The WR51X10038 Defrost Heater is location 618 in photo HERE
and the=> WR50X10071 Defrost Thermostat
ba9f87d6-60d9-4ee7-b168-2123fa15d7a2.jpg

The defrost thermostat is location 630 in photo HERE a tutorial of how to test the defrost heater and defrost thermostat can be found on the parts pages listed above. I will try to put the defrost heater test below. I think the defrost control board is most likely the problem here so look it over first. Manually defrost the evaporator with a hair drier so you can remove the defrost heater and test for continuity. I am here should you have questions Thanks Sea Breeze

How to locate and replace defrost timer on GE GSS23KGSA WW

Yes the GSS23KGSAWW defrost is controlled by the WR55X10942

I have a GE side-by-side refrigerator that is not defrosting. I have checked the evaporator and it is iced up. I need to know how to put it on defrost manually, if I can, to check what component is...

have you tried cleaning the condensor coils. Also check the drain line going to the bottom and make sure its open. if the condensate cant drain it will just refreeze. let me know.

MODEL # GSH22JFTAWW won't go into defrost had board changed out and the element and the temp sensor and temp limit sensor how do you put into defrost mode maunally and what is wrong with it have to...

Which temp sensor did you replace? The one that clips to the top of the cooling coils is the defrost sensing thermistor. The other "temp limit sensor" is thermal cutoff switch that opens the defrost circuit should it get to warm. Be sure you got the right part for this! There are a couple of different temperature rated cutoff thermostats out there and this model uses a pretty high temp rating.
As to your question of manually putting it into defrost, you would need to unplug the refrigerator and disconnect the power ******** of the control board (the only jack that mounts parallel to the board and should be a green colored three wire connector. The terminals on the board should be labeled "comp", "line or L" and "def". You will need to put a jumper wire between the line and def wires on the wire connector (not on the board). Plug the fridge back in and your defrost circuit should be energized.
Good luck with this!

HOW DO YOU PUT UNIT INTO DEFROST

I'll answer your question, but it's not exactly what you want to hear, so if you read any further, you have to agree not to give me a poor rating.

OK, remember the rating deal now.
On older refrigerator, you had a mechanical defrost control timer, which could be advanced by hand into defrost. The greater majority of refrigerators now use electronic boards to determine when to defrost. (part of the energy savings you get with newer refrigerators) Some brands (like LG) have a small switch on the board to put the refrig into a test cycle which will allow the advance to defrost, but most (like GE) do not have such a switch. If you have a defrost issue, the most common cause is a burnt out defrost heater, so manually putting the unit into defrost would not really help anyway. You will have to unload the freezer, remove the back wall out from inside the freezer, and melt the frost with a hair blower.

Fridge does not get cold

I had the same problem. The problem was my freezer was not defrosting itself and for a while i opened up the back and manually defrosted the freezer with a hair dryer (to make it defrost faster) and lots of towels (to soak up all the water). I replaced the defrost heater in the freezer and no more problem. Go to searspartsdirect.com and put in your model # then look for the part. Hope this helps.

GE GDS18LBP Bottom Freezer

Check to see if the evaporator fan is running (the fan inside of the freezer behind the back panel). If it is, pull the interior back panel off of the freezer to see if you have a defrost problem. If there is a large amount of frost/ice, test the heater and defrost thermostat with a multimeter. If they are good, replace the defrost thermostat. Be sure to defrost the ice manually with a hair dryer before you put the freezer back together.
