I have the same problem w/ my Dell Dimension and yes did recently have to reinstall XP -- I swear the speakers worked before the hard drive crashed due to virus. Now reinstalled and virus free -- but also sound free. Help!

  • okreceipt Nov 16, 2008

Thought maybe I was missing the device driver -- but it's there --

Location 65535 (Internal High Definition Audio Bus)

But I get this error message: This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

    Thanks in advance

I loose speaker sounds & volume icon goes missing

    not system sounds

The speakers were working well until I stood up to put the volume up; as soon as I touched the volume I got a static discharge and that speaker stopped working. The left one works fine but the one with the volume shut down completely! Did I burn a circuit inside? How can I fix it? I can't figure out how to open the speaker to take a look inside!

    Hey there brnsuup,

Have you recently done an operating system re-install? If so which one? And do you have all the drivers required for your system? Also the exact model number would be helpful. Dimension 300 does not show on the dell list.

There are 2 volume controls on the audio output in windows 7. one is the system volume the other is the device volume. make sure that they are both at full and then control the sound volume on your speakers.

My speaker volume is very low no matter what i play. All volume controls are up as high as they will go

Have you checked your system audio volume?
If you are using Windows XP go to Start menu -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Volume Control

Make sure that the volume is set to the highest value.

I plugged my speakers into the back of my computer and I still cant get any sound. What should I do?

Verify that the speakers are plugged into the correct color coded plug in back. Verify that the speakers are plugged into a power source Verify that the speakers are on Verify that the speakers are turned up on the actual speakers Verify that your sound is not muted in windows (Control Panel > Hardware and Sound (vista) or just Sounds in XP > Adjust system volume. You can also try opening Windows Media Player and unmuting/turning volume up there. Try several files, mp3s, videos. make sure its working. If you still have no sound try updating the drivers for your sound card, you can figure out what type of sound card you have from the control panel, system, device manager, sound. then just go to that companys website and search for your card to download the latest.
If you do all of this you should have working sound... if you still dont then that would indicate the speakers or a cable is defective, you may want to do some trial and error with known good cables/speakers.

It shows the speakers are on but no sound

If you have an extra headset around, plug it into the same place the speakers are plugged into, if it works, your speakers are bad (or check to make sure the power light is on on them and that their volume knob is turned up).
If you still do not get sound, click on your little volume/speaker icon by your clock, then click 'mixer' at the bottom of it (Windows 7 hopefully?). Make sure the different volume controls are turned up because sometimes one low one will affect the entire system.
(If Windows XP, right-click the speaker, then 'Open Volume Control'. Adjust until you hear sound.)

The speakers wont work no sound

This article contains tips for resolving sound related issues in Windows XP.
No Sound From all speakers
  • Check that the speakers are powered on.
  • Check that the speakers are connected to the correct ports on the PC. This is particularly important If the customer has both integrated sound and a sound card.
  • If the speakers have a volume control button - ensure that this is turned up.
  • Check that the Windows Audio service is running. If this is not running then many of the subsequent troubleshooting steps will not work. Go to Start->Run and type services.msc. Double cliick on Windows Audio. Select Start if possible and check that the Startup Type is Automatic. Click OK.
  • If the speakers are digital speakers then try forcing the sound card to use digital. Go to Start->Control Panel->Sound and Audio Devices.. On the Volume tab, click the Advanced button in the Device Volume section. In the Volume Control window, below the Play Control Volume slider, click Advanced. If this does not show select Advanced Controls from the Options menu. Select Digital Output Only
  • If possible try an external audio source like a Walkman, CD, or MP3 player (connect the speakers to the headphone jack)
  • Check that the volume control in Windows isn't muted or turned too low. See the screen shots below. Go to Start->Control Panel and double click on Sounds and Audio Devices.

Only getting half the volume

The first things I would check would be the volume control within your operating system. If I assume you have Windows XP, you would go to Start-->All Program-->Accessories-->Entertainment and click "Volume Control". Make sure all of the sliders are at least 1/2 way up. You might also want to check to make sure the cable from the speakers to the computer is plugged into the proper jack (usually the green one), as sometimes computers have jacks for rear speakers, which might make them sound quieter.
