Question about HP PC Desktops

1 Answer

For no apparent reason, my cd-rom just began opening and closing continually. Any ideas about what could be causing this erratic behavior? can you provide some possible solutions to try? My computer is an HP pavilion with a Windows XP3 OS. It also has a DVD writer/CD writer combo, a floppy disk and an external Seagate FreeAgent 300Gb hard drive. This is the first significant problem with this three year old computer.

Can a bad bios cause my computer to do this. I did a windows update and after my computer shut down? it would not boot up. theres power the fans all work and the cd-rom opens and closes when I push the...

Try doing a system restore first by using Windows Repair. Insert your Windows installer CD and follow the prompts on how to do a Windows repair.

About the BIOS, it is unlikely that that caused it. The common reason to have the problem is because of corrupted system file(s).

Thanks for using Fixya!

I have an Acer Aspire x1700 and it will not reboot, I cannot locate the reboot disk. How can you help?

Yuo need a lot of try and error to be successful.
First your OS and the BOOT disk that comes with your machine. But if you dont had the CD you need to buy and download it.
Store like Bestbuy,CompUSA,etc.. sell this CD,s or go to this LINK where you can buy it online and download it, choose your OS and any other specs about your System.
After all you need to BURN the files in a blank CD or order for mail shipment.

Then we going to BOOT the system id the CD drive.

To rebuild your hard drive, do the following:
  1. Power up your Acer system.
  2. When prompted (after memory testing completes), press CTRL + ALT + ESC to enter CMOS setup.
  3. At the CMOS Setup screen select Advanced BIOS Features
  4. Verify the Boot Options Sequence is set to the following order:
    1st [CD-ROM]
    2nd [Floppy Disk]
    3rd [Hard Disk]
  5. Insert the Acer System CD, DISK 1 in your CD-ROM drive.
  6. Press F10 to exit and save. When prompted, Do you want to save CMOS data?, select [Yes], then press ENTER.
  7. The system will reboot from the CD-ROM. After booting from the CD-ROM, you will see the Acer Hard Drive Rebuild options displayed.

Note: Use your mouse for choice selections during the HDD recovery process. The mouse will respond slowly during this procedure, DO NOT press the Enter key. Pressing the Enter key will cause the HDD recovery process to terminate.
  8. Select HDD Full Rebuild and follow the on-screen instructions.
  9. When prompted to insert Acer Recovery CD, DISK 2, wait for the CD-ROM to eject DISK 1.
  10. Close the CD-ROM tray and click OK. The system will continue to rebuild the hard drive back to factory load.
After being prompted to remove disk and restart system the unit will load system software and hardware. During this process the system will reboot several times.
Your Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity (COA) ID number will automatically be entered for you. Should you need this number for any reason, look for your Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity (COA) ID number on the cover of your system.

CD/burner is gone and Wont load anything i put in.

Try using device manager and deleting the CD from it, then reboot and let windows do its thing with intalling it again. Let me know if windows does NOT try to reinstall the CD drive or you get any error messages

I can not open my disk rewriter please help

  • Most cd drives have a small pin hole located just below the mouth of the cd tray. If your cd rom is black this makes it much harder to notice and easy to miss. I have a picture or cd rom drive on the left. This will give you an idea of where that pin hole is located.

  • Use a small paperclip and insert it into that hole. You use the paperclip to find the lever that pushes the drive open. Usually you'll have to fiddle with finding the exact spot but it's not rocket science. Most cd drives should open if you find the right spot and push in with the paperclip.

  • If for what ever reason the drive does not open. Chances are mechanically the device has a moving part that has seized up and will no longer function normally. In this case It is better to take apart the cd rom with tools as it gives you insight on what part malfunctioned. Sometimes its as easy as a ruber band going out of place. Worse case scenario if it is completely broken cd drives are so cheap you can replace one with ease.

Has anyone found a fix (short of getting rid of) for Logitech MX 600 Laser Mouse pointer erratic operation?? Seems to work OK on a Flat smooth surface, but jumps all over the place on any mouse pad I have...

  1. Mouse is not clean.
  2. Optical portion of mouse is blocked.
  3. Moisture or other material on finger.
Mouse is not clean Users who have an optical mechanical mouse (most common mouse for desktop computers) are likely experiencing erratic behavior because the mouse is not clean or is dirty. Optical portion of mouse is blocked
Users who have an optical mouse are likely experiencing erratic behavior because a portion of the optical eye is blocked. Most commonly this is caused by a hair.
Moisture or other material on finger Users who are using a touchpad may experience erratic behavior because of moisture or other material on the finger such as lotion.
Mouse has been cleaned and still has problems If you've cleaned the mouse and continue to encounter issues and this mouse has worked in the past fine unfortunately your mouse is likely defective. One additional test that can be done to help determine if this is the case or not is to connect the mouse to another computer. Otherwise we suggest replacing the mouse.
