Question about PC Desktops

I purchased a new laptop, the usb hub cord is not long enough to reach my usb slots on the laptop so I purchased a usb extension cord 3' from radioshack, but when I use it vista says it does not recognize and cannot install, when I plug the usb direct into the laptop everything works. any suggestions?

I checked the ext cord I am trying to use and it says it is 2.0 usb. I have also found that my computer will not fully shutdown when I have a usb extension cord plugged in. I will sit on the screen that says shutting down until I manually shut it down, any other suggestions? I think I am just going to have to buy a new hub that comes with a longer cord.

You may need a 2.0 USB cable. Read on:
The cables will most definitely look the same. That's because the connectors didn't change between USB 1.1 and 2.0.
But not all cables that look the same are the same.

A higher quality 1.1 cable stands a better chance of working at 2.0 speeds. What do I mean by quality? Well, it's nothing that's visible, I'm afraid. It has to do with the quality of the wires used and especially the shielding against electrical interference. Higher speeds are more susceptible to interference and noise - either from the outside, or from the USB signals themselves.
I also say in "typical" usage, because not all scenarios are the same either. For example a short cable is more likely to work than a long one. If you have an electrically noisy environment that might cause problems.
And of course the devices themselves play a big role. Some devices are more tolerant of weak or noisy signals than other. Purchase a 2.0 USB cable, it is not expensive.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

USB device detection in Gateway Laptop

It sounds like your laptop BUS (usb power) does not have enough power to power the interface between the two. I had a couple of devices that did that. You may have to buy a SELF powered USB HUB in order to make them connect. The self powered usb will get it's power from and A/C wall outlet and not the laptop. You will connect you device to hub and hub to laptop.

I lost the power cord. How do I get a new one?

Most electronics stores (Radio Shack etc. ) will have a replacement power cord. You may want to bring the hub with you to ensure you get the right cord. Best of luck to you!

The problem is that some usb hub devices are not powered enough to recognise peripherals, i always recommend buying a mains powered usb hub as the pc's supply can find it difficult to power the usb ports enough as well as powering other components in your pc.

My USB socket in my laptop won't hold a usb connection. Now I'm unable to use it to hook up to my printer, flashdrive, etc. What should I do? Do you know of and repair shops.

How old is the laptop?
If it's new enough, you might be able to get Compaq to repair it for you.

If not, wellllll it might be a little tough.
The only place you are going to be able to get replacement parts for it, is through Compaq / HP (they are one in the same)

It doesn't hold it on any of the USB ports?
You might want to try getting a little unpowered USB 4 port hub, and attaching it to the port, and then figure out a way to bond the hub to the port (hot glue, tape etc) just so that you don't have to plug and unplug it. It might be ugly, but it would give you 4 good new ports a lot cheaper then taking it to a shop.

does this usb port work with other things?
Try another usb port, sometimes usb extension ports or hubs don't carry enough voltage to power certain devices.

2.0 CH USB powered speaker system is not working. We have plugged into the computer and cna't get any sound

You must to buy and use an active USB hub. It's like the ordinary USB,but have own power supply.I think your speaker haven't enough power,so try to use the active HUB!!It works.
You can purchase it in any PC shop,or the Internet shop etc.
