I have recently purchased your 250GB Portable Hard Drive USB2.0/Firewire. The idea is to put all my thousands of photo albums, and computer pictures on one hard drive. each time I try to download a picture or photo file, the following caption comes up:- "Cannot create or replace --------(file). Cannot find the specific file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name". This is Greek to me - Please help.--- Jim Carpenter

Since writing to you, I have succeeded in downloading into the Portable hard drive, on my second (laptop) computer. Seems I can now do what I want to do, on that computer. Many Thanks

You have to specify the path to download the pictures.
Make a folder on your new disk then select that folder like default to download all your pics.

If you want only to pass all your old pic to a new disk, simply select the folder, >> then (right click) select COPY >> then Open the folder (already created) in your new hard drive and with a mouse cursor inside the folder (right click) and hit PASTE ---------All your files will start to copying

Maximum hard disk size for hp a1610n

Based on The Spec's of your System you have a 250gb Hard Drive however the Maximum size will be less then that due to formatting the drive so you can expect that to be like 10% less then 250gb (just a guess) plus a lot of computers come with a restore partition which is usually around 12gb assuming you leave it factory stock.... Your computer by default will set your Hard Drive to the Maximum size... now as far as how big you can install the sky is the Limit your computer is new enough it should except any size Hard Drive available at the store.

How does a external hard drive work, and does it make my computer run better, I have purchased one but I am confused on how it works.

An external Hard drive is used to store information in any format. Ususally it is connected to USB, but it may happen that it is connected to either e-sata, which is the fastest or firewire.
when connector is inserted into the socket (USB, e-sata, firewire) Windows will automatically detect it. You can find your external Hard drive in My Computer, normally labeled removable drive. You can then double click it to access the information on the drive, or copy information to the drive. This means you can easily make a back up of all your files. Now if you so wish you can store it for backup purposes or you can use it to transfer information, contained on it, to another Computer/Laptop. An external Hard drive does not make your computer faster, but it does in a sense make your computer perform better,as it takes away the need for that data to be stored of your main boot hard drive. Therefore making virus scans on your PC run quicker and your PC has more space on it's main boot hard drive to perform tasks if it needs to.

Please rate my expertise, it's the thumbs up on the top right hand side of this solution.
Thanks

Hard Drive -- Dead Computer

Jim

You can buy an external USB drive enclosure, mount the drive in the enclosure, then connect the old drive to the new system.

here is a popular model:

if teh old system is a portable, then there are 2.5 versions also available

Verbatim 250GB External Hard Disk not recognized by PC

Almost always, when a USB drive doesn't assign a drive letter in MY Computer the issue is a Mapped network drive using the drive letter the USB drive is attempting to use.

With the drive connected, open DISK MANAGEMENT find the USB Drive, right click it and assign it an available drive letter.

It sounds like your external hard drive went belly up unfortunately. Unless you backed up your files to another location (remember, backing up means having your files on 2 or more locations, not just "keeping them" on an external drive).

I have recently bought a samsung 750gb portable hard drive, everything was great I plugged it in and started to transfer videos onto it. After about 6~7 hrs the hard disc started making a constant clicking...

Does it still make a clicking sound? If so, 2 reasons for this are: the USB or Firewire connection is faulty or yes, your hard drive is faulty. Try a different USB or Firewire port and see if it helps, otherwise return it for a new one. There is no need to keep one that you never know if and when it will fail. Good luck.

I have plugged the USB lead into the pc processor for a recently purchased 160 GB portable hard drive but I don't know where to access it to save files to it. When I look in 'my computer' it isn't there. ...

Yaa, it should be in my computer.
  • Check out your portable HDD manual, How to use?
  • Check out if there is any power switch on your portable HDD. Some of external HDD have a switch.
  • If there is any one it must be in on position to use.

If any problem, Just Ask me...
Thanks
Iqbal
