Engine stops after ~ 15 - 20 min of mowing

After one year of use (a season actually ), cold engine starts OK. After some mowing ( time varyies), the engine's rpm starts varying ( wavy sound ), slows down and dies. I let it cool for some time and it starts OK again but this time it takes less time to die on me; and so on until I quit trying. I had the same problem with another unit, a year ago, but it happened just after I bought it so I returned and replaced it.

I have the same problem, i bought a mower in 11/08 that is an 07 model, l bit more information on the prob is the mower has about a years worth of hours on it 38 and if fine cold but after 20 min it wont handle a load but will idle, i changed the filter and same prob. Lowes change the plug, filter, and did a tune up kit supposidly on the carb and found nothing wrong afterwards so they sold it to me at a discont. Not sure of their service persons test but the unit will idle all day just wont handle a load long. The consumption is more than will feed. the carb has an electronic shut off on it and i feel that the float is sticking so it is senseing that it is flooded when not it is starving because the filter is sucked dry. The lines are clean with a new filter, it gravity feeds fine. It seems that it is vapor locking but not sure normal tricks dont work. it must be the electronic sensor on the carb. I just hate to tear into a new mower that lowes was supposed to fix especially when it appears to be a common problem, what do you think boscia with this information. Those suggestions are common fixes in the perfect world.

We just rebuilt our engine after 486 hours, it smoked and that was the only issue. Now it will run, but won't cut under load. Acts as if it is flooding. I just rebuilt the carb and the same thing!

I'm think the valves may be to tight. What are the spec's for valve adjustment
and do the aluminum push rod go on the int or ex?

Can you tell me the year of this machine? The same model number covers various years.

Try changing the spark plugs. if that doesnt work check the fuek lines for hole and leaks, check the fuel filter and clean if necessary. remove the carbuerator and inspect the gasket; it should be soft and flexible, if it seems hard or brittle replace it. clean the carb with carb cleaner sray (available at any local auto parts store) and compressed air. make sure you get inside the small fuel rail holes.

Changed filter, oil, full of gas checked gas flow everything is good , when I start m lawn mower it runs , when I engage my pto and start mowing for about 5 minutes it just quits

if this is got the 27 hp kohler engine, I know exactly whats wrong with it , due to grass and engine oil building up in a short time under cylinder heads , it actually makes a tight ball of grass and stuff there !! this holds the engine heat and ruins the ign module that's just above it there , I put two on in one season ( tractor runs 6-10 hrs day 6 days a week ) I finally gave up I bought a Kawasaki 27 hp twin and installed it , now its run for two seasons and no problems
engaging the pto has nothing to do with it , it would cut off if you just drove it around for 15 minutes

My john deere push mower starts fine mows for 10 min quits wont start so I took the the gas cap off looked at it put it back on push the prime bulb 1 time it started ran for 10 min quit did the gas cap...

I'm not sure of the model number of your mower or engine to know the fuel and carburetor set up. I do have one easy thing to try though as it sounds as if a vacume is building up in the tank. Try putting a half of tank of gas in it, leave the gas cap off, and see if it continues as it was or if it runs ok. If this stops the issue your cap vent is pluged up. I hope this helps

My parents have a self propelled...front drive...walk behind 22in cut mower purchased at Home Depot 3 seasons ago.....I do the maintance on the mower....sharpen blade....change the oic/plug &...

Does the mower die right away (cuts out) or does it sputter to a halt. Sputtering out would indicate a fuel problem. If it just cuts out when hot, then more likely an ignition problem. Your coil may need replacing. Take a close look at the coil wire (spark plug wire) and its routing. Make sure it's not touching part of the engine where it's heating up and has caused a "leak" to ground it out when it gets hot. If all is well then check your spark when the engine is hot and cuts out. Make sure you have a very good blue spark and not a weak one (check it cold first and then compare!). Again, indicating a possible ignition coil problem. Hope this helps and best of luck to you.

Manufacturer: Volkswagen Model: GL 2 litre Year: 1997 September Engine Capacity: 1600cc Vin: VVWZZZ1HZWW139290 had been inconsistantly stopping during drive at any speed - then after few mins would start...

ur description is somewhat vague. by "stopping during drive" mean the engine stalls?

oh actually yea replace the crank sensor. i cant quite remember which side it's on. although i'm about 80% sure its on the front side. the side closest to the front of the vehicle. this is a very very common problem on the 2.0 liter engines. when the engine is cold the sensor works good and it will run until it gets hot and then the sensor will fail and the engine will stall. this sounds like your exact problem. i used to work at a vw dealer you can trust this diag.

Once engaged and start mowing, you can mow for about 20 feet or more and then it just slows down and the engine wants to die, but stop pulling immediately and the engine catches up and goes back to full...

This actually happened to a friend of mine! I saw it! Mow about 20 feet, and had to stop, then 20 feet...well, you get the picture. It was his air filter! Stopped up pretty good. We blew it out and it worked fine.
I really hope this helps. --W/D--

I have a Troy-Bilt Mower - Model 834. It has a Honda GVC 160cc engine. It is supposed to start after two pulls when cold and did so since I bought it in 2006. But, just recently it takes 6-10 pulls to...

sounds like the throttle cable has slipped on the side of the engine if they dont pull the choke all the way on they wont start too well. one way to find out is take your air cleaner and outer cover off so you can see in the front of the carby the put your throttle on start/choke position the choke butterfly should be closed if not check your cable.
