After one year of use (a season actually ), cold engine starts OK. After some mowing ( time varyies), the engine's rpm starts varying ( wavy sound ), slows down and dies. I let it cool for some time and it starts OK again but this time it takes less time to die on me; and so on until I quit trying. I had the same problem with another unit, a year ago, but it happened just after I bought it so I returned and replaced it.
Help!

Try changing the spark plugs. if that doesnt work check the fuek lines for hole and leaks, check the fuel filter and clean if necessary. remove the carbuerator and inspect the gasket; it should be soft and flexible, if it seems hard or brittle replace it. clean the carb with carb cleaner sray (available at any local auto parts store) and compressed air. make sure you get inside the small fuel rail holes.

I have the same problem, i bought a mower in 11/08 that is an 07 model, l bit more information on the prob is the mower has about a years worth of hours on it 38 and if fine cold but after 20 min it wont handle a load but will idle, i changed the filter and same prob. Lowes change the plug, filter, and did a tune up kit supposidly on the carb and found nothing wrong afterwards so they sold it to me at a discont. Not sure of their service persons test but the unit will idle all day just wont handle a load long. The consumption is more than will feed. the carb has an electronic shut off on it and i feel that the float is sticking so it is senseing that it is flooded when not it is starving because the filter is sucked dry. The lines are clean with a new filter, it gravity feeds fine. It seems that it is vapor locking but not sure normal tricks dont work. it must be the electronic sensor on the carb. I just hate to tear into a new mower that lowes was supposed to fix especially when it appears to be a common problem, what do you think boscia with this information. Those suggestions are common fixes in the perfect world.
We just rebuilt our engine after 486 hours, it smoked and that was the only issue. Now it will run, but won't cut under load. Acts as if it is flooding. I just rebuilt the carb and the same thing!
I'm think the valves may be to tight. What are the spec's for valve adjustment
and do the aluminum push rod go on the int or ex?
Can you tell me the year of this machine? The same model number covers various years.
