    Shouldn't Sony have to stand behind their product since it is obviously defective??? There seem to be a lot of people that have the 60 gb system that have experienced the exact same problem.

    Thanks for the info, I will continue to pursue the matter myself, (not saying that I will have any more luck than you) but hey, it's worth a try. If I get anywhere, I will let you know.

    My 60 gig PS3 appears to be dead. I press the button: it lights up green, I hear the drives and fans spool up for a couple of seconds, then the light flicks to amber then flashes red at me - at which point all drive and fan activity stops.
    I'm thinking firmware issue... this ps3 has been absolutely bulletproof.

    On a side note, my copy of LittleBigPlanet is stuck inside! anyone know a way to safely eject it?

    To the best of my knowledge, you're screwed.  I really, really hope you are within warranty so the replacement will be free and you have an effective way to back-up your ps3 save data. If not, get your checkbook ready to dish out an extra $149 on an already expensive system. This does not appear to be a firmware issue, but rather your fans dying from all the heat the CPU emits (or so I'm told) however, I have read a lot of testimonies online about firmware issues, so who knows?  All I know is Sony doesn't, or they do not wish to disclose the nature of this problem with any confidence or humility, as their image of their cutting-edge system is one that is "failproof."  Good luck getting an answer from Sony.  I'd socut around online as much as possible, since I'm sure more people have had this problem by now.  Just so you know my original goddamn NES still works, and other than "blowing" on cartridges and wiping down discs, I have never, in my 18 years of gaming had a system die on me.  Systems that still work that I've had for years: NES, SNES, Dreamcast, Genesis, N64, Gameboy,PS1, PS2, etc. systems that don't: PS3.  WTF?

    To answer your question about little big planet disc:  When (or if, hopefully) you send your system back to sony, they send you a box (coffin) for your PS3.  It comes with a crappy and confusing sheet of paper detailing what you need to throw in the box, and make sure to write on the provided space what the game is, because if you don't, you may not get it back.  Good Luck!

I had to pay the $149 for a refurbished system, lost all of my hdd data, and had to deal with Sony's HORRIBLE customer service for a few hours of my life I will never get back.  I recieved an identical 60 gig ps3 with only a 90 day warranty.  When I asked about PAYING for a longer warranty they said a longer warranty absolutely wasn't available.  Pretty bitter about the whole thing.  New Ps3 works fine, but now I shudder every time I turn it on, for it may be the last : (

    One would think.  I haven't really had much of any interest in the Xbox series (Not because I'm a Sony fanboy but because Microsoft as a business really rubs me the wrong way.  And I'm a Mac person.) but their customer service for the rrod problem occuring in many units is pretty outstanding.  The impression I got from Sony was that they were aware of this problem, but since it isn't common enough, they were like, "tough sh*t."  The customer service reps not only didn't know what they were talking about, but flat out lied to me.  One conversation with a rep (name is Matt) resulted in him telling me that Sony knew the first units were faulty, but life sucks.  He also told me I couldn't talk with a technician about my problem because he doesn't even know how to get a hold of one.  Another conversation with a different rep who didn't have a clue, put me on hold like 5 times to CONSULT A TECHNICIAN.  Sorry for the rant.  Overall, very frustrating with many calls, and I've sent long letters to the corporate offices and get an automated email every time not even addressing my problem.  I don't know how to pursue this further, but as you can see, I'm pretty pissed off.

it seems to me like you have the yellow light of death, but don't worry this is something that can be fixed.
You have two options here
Option1 you can send the console to SONY for $150, they will send you a refurbished model oh and all data may be lost. The whole process usually takes about 4-6 weeks.
Option 2You can fix the problem at home with a PS3 repair guide worth only $40 a 3rd of the cost of sony, the ps3 will be fixed within the next hour or 2.

My glowbouy flashes green and red...what does this mean

According to the owners manual for these swimming pool lights, this is what each colored indicator means. Hope this helps.

Solid green
The battery pack is fully charged.
Slow flashing green
The battery pack is almost fully charged.
Slow flashing yellow
The battery pack is half charged.
Medium flashing yellow
The battery pack is less than half charged.
Fast flashing yellow
The battery pack has almost no charge.
Fast flashing red
A charging error has occurred and the light should be unplugged and then plugged back in. If the Fast Flashing Red persists after several attempts, the battery condition is questionable.

Also in the trouble shooting guide, it mentions this:

Problem: Red Indicator Light Is Flashing While Charging

A red flashing indicator light when charging indicates a selftest
error condition. Unplug the product and plug it in again.
Try this several times; if the indicator light continues to flash
red, unplug the GlowBuoy and take it to an authorized service

or you can try to get your money back if you hve a receit i say give it bak and get you a new one. or see if you can find one ebay or game stores

PS3 does not turn on. When I press the on button, red light turns green thne to yellow then to flashing red.

This is called a System Error. It is about the same as the Xjunks ring of death. You need to call Sony if you haven't broken your seal yet.

Then I'd say it's a reasonably sure thing that the green light is just burned out, The lights are supposed to be off at first, then red when there's a partial charge, then green when there's a full charge, then flashing between red and green when the "battery saver" kicks in. If you're seeing off, then red, then off, then flashing red, then that means everything in the charging circuit is working perfectly, there's just no green light.
