First let me say i take a rather blunt approach to o/s issues, this being said I think re installation of the O/s xp sp3 and then update of the drivers fro the laptop from IBM web site would be the best way to go with this. I feel that most likely the drivers for the ports you are using are not up to date for your devices (usb items).
I appologise if this is not what you wanted to hear but it is the best way to get working thos areas that are malfunctioning at this point.
Last if this does not solve the issue then the Motherboard would be the next item I would investigate as causeing problems a replacement would be called for if it is suspect as damaged or defective.

How to turn on wifi

hi

the T42 does not have WiFi, instead it facilitates internet connection via 16 BIT & 32 Bit PCMCIA slot to install a WiFi card , in order to go on the internet.

The ThinkPad uses the following adapters: v 360, 365X, 380, 600: 16-Bit PCMCIA v T20, T22, T23: 32-Bit CardBus and MiniPCI v T23: 32-Bit CardBus and MiniPCI Daughter Card v T30: 32-Bit CardBus and LAN on Planar Board (LOB) v T4x: 32-Bit CardBus and LAN on Planar Board (LOB). 16- and 32-Bit PC Card adapters are configured during ThinkPad initialization. Network Interface Controller data rates are: v For Token Ring: 4/16 MBps v For Ethernet: 10 Mbps...........16 bit PCMCIA 10/100 Mbps.......32 bit CardBus 10/100 Mbps.......MiniPCI and Daughter Card 10/100 Mbps.......T3x and T40 LOB 10/100/1000 Mbps..T42 LOB The MiniPCI Ethernet adapter is accessed behind a removable plate located on the bottom of the ThinkPad directly above the Model/Type S/N sticker. For T20 and T22, the MiniPCI adapter may be an Ethernet/Modem combination card. The Daughter Card (T23) is secured with two screws and is located next to the MiniPCI modem adapter.

I have a 4 yrs old IBM Thinkpad (Model R51) and its USB port is not working. There are some lines on the screen as well. What is the cheaper way to get it sorted out. Somebody told me motherboard has to be...

There are several PCMCIA USB ports available, I have an IBM T20 and I bought a Belkin USB 2.0 card from ebay for under $20, it has 2 USB ports, (and I've seen them with up to 4) and most electronics store should have them. They also come with Firewire ports if you choose to go that route

Need WiFi instead of Bluetooth

You have two choices for a wireless connection, a PCMCIA card or a USB device.
My choice would be a PCMCIA card, because it frees up a USB port.
There are quite a few PCMCIA card to choose from, I favour Netgear and D-Link.
Their instructions make them easy to install and setup.
Let me know if you have problems.

Thinkpad 380ed + USB PCMCIA-card. Can it work?

This is probably due to the power requirements of the pcmcia card you have plugged in. There are 5volt and 3.3volt slots. You have probably plugged a 5volt card into a 3.3volt pcmcia slot.

VGA port problem

That could be a video card driver issue. It seems that when the projector is connected, windows detects it a create another screen using up more memory. Try download a latest video card driver for your laptop http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/license.do?filename=mobiles/1rd635ww.exe this is for Windows 200/XP for the IBM Thinkpad T42. If that doesn't work then you should also try updating your operating system. Hope that helps!
