Panasonic PT-60LCX64 Air Filter Cleaning

Dear FixYa Guru,

My 60inch Panasonic just prompted me the "Air Filter needs cleaning" message. Not in that exact context but it is due for one after being owned for nearly 3 years. My request is for directions to manually access and clean this air filter without hiring the professionals. To be more specific, where are the spots to clean inside and around the television. I've heard that it is a pretty nickel to have it done by the pros.

Many thanks in advance,

Hai Nguyen

Cleaning filter for the Panansonic PT-501LCX64.

I just had a T.V. tech do this. The filters are located on the two removable filters on the back side of the T.V. They look like the speaker units. He removed those two units, unplugged them & set them on the floor. He took some type of electronic cleaner with a cloth & wiped them down. The filters themselves are plastic. He explained that air flows through some tube connected to these plastic filters for cooling down below. He admitted they didn't look dirty--put everything back together & it is working fine now.

I imagine that dirty or not the timer is automatically set for every 400 hrs. of use to give you the prompt that the filter needs cleaning & will shut off in one minute so you can call a T.V. tech?

So to reset the timer--follow the other detailed prompts listed on this board & or use your owners manual & follow the prompts for replacing the bulb. That should take you somewhere to reset the timer--so you have another 400 hours of operation.

I believe it's with the T.V. turned off--hold down the down volume on your tv itself while holding the swap button on the remote control for 5-7 seconds---then follow the prompts. You should see a prompt for replacing a bulb & then one for filter cleaning. Then just reset the timer.

Hopefully this will help?

I get a message on screen telling me the filter needs to be checked and to call for service.

Your tv has cooling fans in common with most flat panel tv's and they draw the cooling air in through air filters. Unfortunately on your model, the filters are located inside the tv and are not user serviceable due to the amount of disassembly required. That's why your tv is telling you to get a qualified tv servicing technician to attend to it.

When the filters get blocked, the tv will overheat sooner or later and break down: a relatively cheap routine servicing matter then becomes an expensive repair.

I strongly advise against trying to clean the filter yourself as it is very easy yo ruin your tv, but if you are technically competent with servicing this kind of equipment then you can download the service manual for free from here. You'll also need a program such as WinRAR to decompress the file.

I hope that you have found my reply to be of assistance to you, please take a moment to rate my answer which has been provided at no charge to you..

My PT-60LCX64 says i need to clean my air filter i took off the back panel and cleaned all the dust out of it but did not find the air filter i took off the speakers thinking they were the air filters and...

The air filter is deep inside the set. You need to dismantle the unit and get the light engine out. I would highly recommend calling an authorized service center to do this for you.

But if you insist, email me at and I will bounce back the service manual for you.

there is a louvered air intake panel on either lower side of tv. there is 1 or 2 screws the filter is right behind that panel.. take it out and clean it with warm dishsoapy water and pat dry on a flat surface with paper towels then reinstall. your th will not come on till the panel is screwed back into place. there is a microswitch type sensor that makes sure that the screws are in place...goodday

Air filter keep popping on screen and shut off after 1 minute.

I had the same problem with my Panasonic tv, just 3 days after a technician came out to fix "fuzzy spots" which were multi colored, but mostly green spots. I really thought that the technician was in some way responsible, but Panasonic insisted that there was no possible way he was. It was going to cost $240.00 for him to come out to clean the air filter, and both the technician and Panasonic insisted that I couldn't do it myself. I had decided to buy a new tv to cut my losses. My boyfriend talked me into trying to fix it, we are both sort of mechanically inclined, and it was going in the trash anyway.
We took the back and top off the tv. It took some looking, but we finally found the filter, just over the projector. We removed the cover, it has to be done from the back of the tv, it is black and held on by 4 small screws, be careful not to drop them into the tv, we dropped one, but it shook out. We vacuumed the filter really well, and vacuumed around everywhere. We put the tv back together, not expecting it to work, but thinking at least we tried. It works great. It has only been a few days, but it seems like the problem has been solved.
Good luck if you decide to try. I have decided not to put another penny into the tv.

The air filter should be a user-accessible thing. Consult your owners manual for details. Can you find the manual?
