All those disc formats will work with what you are trying to do. Are there problems?

I have dubbed vcr tape to a Sony DVD-RW disc and tried playing it back through a toshiba player and it keeps coming up Bad Disk. My PC won't even recognise it. When started dubbing the screen displayed 1hr...

Did you say you used a DVD-RW disc to transfer a videotape onto? The reason your PC won't recognise that disc is because the data format on it is a different language to what PCs understand - plus an unfinalised DVD-RW won't play in other DVD players - it is usually an incompatible format.

(DVD+RW discs with titles/top menus created in video mode CAN be played on a PC DVD drive or a normal DVD player as can finalised DVD-R discs (DVD-R discs MUST be recorded and finalised in the same recorder for compatible playback). DVD-RW discs can only be viewed on the unit they were written/recorded on.

The other reason for the 'remaining space' on the disc you describe showing less than 120 minutes is due to a title recently being recorded or erased - unless you format it - the 120 minute / 4.7GB DVD-RW will not show full available space. Erasing titles on re-writable DVDs does not increase space. The same rule applies to unfinalised +R / -R discs (you cannot re-format these to get the space back once recorded - they are 'once only' writables)

I recommend you invest in some DVD-R discs and re-copy your VHS tape to that - then if you are satisfied with the result, title etc., finalise the DVD-R - it will play on any DVD player or PC with DVD support (or it should). These discs are relatively inexpensive to buy just about anywhere.

Final note: do NOT finalise the DVD-RW you recorded (I hope you haven't already done this) - simply format/erase it - re-use it for something else or keep it until you need it.

You can use any brand of DVD, just take note of the format before recording/playing.

How to copy anything else on finalised DVD or - to HDD on samsung HR 755

If the disk is finalized you can't normally write anything else.

The words "Finalizing" and "Closing" are used interchangeably by most recording applications. To "Finalize" or "Close" a disc means that no additional data can be written to it. This is done when the last session's lead-in is written. The option to close a disc is usually selected after all of the data that will be written has been placed in the project window, and the user knows that no more data will be added to the disc in subsequent recording sessions. The next writable address on the disc is not recorded in that lead-in, so the CD recorder, in subsequent attempts to write, has no way of knowing where to begin writing.

When I put a DVD+RW disk in trys to format the disk then says the disk is protected. If I open and close the door it trys to format the disk again

It may be the brand of disc you are using. Have you tried any other brands? Have you tried DVD-RW? Might make a difference. I'm using DVD-RW and most of them work flawlesly.

Formatting disk

You should not format a dvd-r disc as it is a record once disc and formating is a recording function. The message "use a +r/rw" is telling you that the system will only recognise a + disc and not a - disc.

Replace the dvd-rw drive in a sanyo drw500 with new betterproduct

IF u are only talking abt the Drive only then yes u can get a better one now.
From what u had stated I prsume tht it is in an external bay which has USB or firewire compatibilty , Right?
If this is the case, then U can get a better drive for this, any tyoe will do as long as it is a DVD RW drive.
The one u have currently is a very old one which has very limited capability like recording to DVD-ROM cd's, it can only write DVD+ROM types....
Now u can find Drives which supports + / - type dvd discs and ROM's and also RAM Drives.
Just do a google search or I can state what I uses. I Use
1 - Sony DVD RW DRU-845S
2. TDK DVDRW 1616N
These are the best in it's region when they were released, I believe there are better ones now.
Cheers

Recording Fall, Invalid disk

Try using Sony +R discs. or +RW's are good, any brand as long as they are +'s. For some reason alot of +R discs brands will not work, I wait and just get Sony +R or the +RW's on sale and stock up and I have no more troubles. Mine is the 05MU. The ZU is a little strange with the RW but will still record. Hope this helps.
