Question about Olympus MJU 300 Digital Camera

2 Answers

MJU 300 Hello my partners MJU 300 camera has developed a fault where when the shutter slide is opened it starts as normal the lens extends the lcd starts then allmost imediately the lens retracts. if it does stay out/on as soon as you take a photo it retracts & shuts down. i have tried a different battery same thing happens. so in my wisdom i decided to remove the shutter slider cover in the hope of finding some fluff on a switch but unfortunately it has only worsened the problem now the camera wont even start nothing just as if dead. Any help will be greatly received & preferably before i have to come clean & admit my repairing error to the other half (bless her). Best wishes Ian

Re: MJU 300

Sean Sorry about this but Olympus charge £100 flat rate for all repairs- costly i thought. however i opted for buying a replacement from Ebay £30 as good as new. seems a real waste but looks like olympus run an almost dissposable camera type policy. if you hear of any solutions let me know i'll do the same for you Regards Ian

Re: MJU 300

Ian, It's not a solution I'm afraid, but I have the exact same problem as you had. What's worse, I followed the exact same methodology as you did and now my camera doesn't work either. Unlike you though, I own it, so have nobody to answer to. Wondering how you got on with yours? Did you find a fix, or take it to a repair shop in the end? Sean

Shutter is not opening in PL-90

A stuck automatic lens cover is a fairly common problem, but it is normally easy to fix. A single grain of sand jamming the cover mechanism is normally the culprit, and you want to try to dislodge it:

Point the camera straight down into a vacuum hose (while the vacuum is on) and tap it around the insides. This will help to **** the dirt out instead of pushing it in further like compressed air might do.Also turn the camera on and off constantly while doing this.

1) Try blowing lots of compressed air around the lens cover to clean the mechanism. Or use a hair dryer for a few seconds (don't want to heat up the camera). Use no heat mode if possible.

2) Slide a thin strip of paper between the lens cover shutters and the outer support ring. Work it around 360 degrees to clear out any debris that may be in there.

3) With the lens barrel extended and pointed downward, tap the lens barrel with a pencil while you extend and retract the lens by powering the camera on and off. Repeat the above three steps several times. If repeated tries don't work then it may be necessary to open the lens barrel to access the lens cover mechanism. The lens cover mechanism is usually accessible for many cameras without needing to open up the camera case.

My camera lens will not extend when the cover is pulled back. The battery is fully charged and but when I pull the lens cover back the lens should zoom out automatically but it does not. I can't...

You are probably suffering from the most common fault with the MJU 300/400 range of cameras. If you can still see pictures from your memory card when you use the quick view button, then this is a good indication that the software of the camera is operating perfectly. However the camera switches to photo capture mode when the lens cover is moved back. It is a common fault with these cameras that the black plastic armature operated by the sliding action becomes loosened from the case resulting initially in the cover becoming sloppy and causing the lens to keep closing erratically. More importantly the plastic armature which is positioned to operate a tiny Surface Mounted switch can cause the fragile plastic 'nib' to break off. It is this switch that in effect turns the camera on. If this is what has happened, it is the most common fault, there is very little that can be done as a DIY repair unless you have access to speciallised SMD soldering equipment, experience in this type of repair and most importantly a source of supply for the SMD switch. I have as yet been unable to identify the type or supplier myself. The alternative is to take the camera to an authorised repair shop. This is the expensive route but you might be able to keep the costs down by making it obvious that you know what the fault is etc.

Lens cover doesn't open when switching on

If you've recently dropped the camera you may have damaged the lens tube (housing) or jarred the zoom mechanism off of its track. Either one of those problems will require professional repair. If it hasn't suffered from a drop, your problem may be due to weak/worn out batteries or corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, your batteries may be to weak/worn to properly power the camera, or the camera may require professional repair.

Lens will not extend

You need to clean around the lense first. Blow high pressure air spray and get the most sand out of the lense you possibly can.

If it did not open 100%, try to pull it out NOT too hard. If the lese goes up and down and turns you should follow the lense while pulling it out.

When it is 100% out, (the way normally opens) Clean around the lense more.

Turn you camera on and off a few times. It should be back to normal.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This may be a repair issue with the sensor that is located behind the front sliding lens cover. You may want to call Olympus Customer Service to discuss repair policies and procedures. Their telephone number is 800-622-6372 option 2 and then option 3

Are you talking about the sliding door that powers on the camera and covers the lens?
There is a metal plate with two screws on the bottom of the sliding door that holds the door to the camera, try tightening the screws and see if that helps. Or else see if the door is slightly bent out of shape, and try to bend it back if you can.
This is a common problem on the Stylus-300 camera, you can buy a replacement door from eBay -
