I lost all my maps on my Garmin Street Pilot C330. I contacted Garmin support and went through a number of steps with them including a master reste to no avail. My unot was not being detected on their website and I couldn't register it or access "My maps". All the while I was trying to fix this I was indoors at my desktop where my unit would lose satellite reception. I took my laptop computer and unit outdoors where I got satellite reception. Loaded the Garmin USB drivers and Communicator program on my laptop. Turned on the unit, let it attain satellite reception, plugged it into the computer w/ USB cable and bingo! The unit was detected by the Garmin website. I was then able to register and access My Maps. I downloaded my maps to the unit, which in all took about an hour to complete. Problem solved.

SOURCE: Garmin Nuvi 660 lost Europe maps
Eventually managed to speak to a man at Garmin who confirmed that it was not loading any European maps because it didn't have enough spare memory to load them all. He said that he would email me instructions for freeing up sufficient memory, the email never arrived but I decided to delet all the voice languages that were no use to me and all the other language 'help' files and tried again - it worked.
At no point did I get a 'insufficiant memory' warning, which would have been very helpful, nor is there any guidance for how much memory will be required when embarking on the update. Take note Garmin...

My understanding is there are no free maps and anyone using or offering one is liable for prosecution. The use of unpaid maps is Piracy and not part of this forums brief to supply them or point one in the direction to where pirate software may be offered.
Most times the maps require an activation code which is part of the licence code issued with your GPS and the Map being purchased.
Many companies are now applying security tags to maps that when operated lock the unit so it is dysfuctional and has to be sent to the manufacturer to be unlocked for a fee + the licence for new maps, so beware

You didn't say how long you've had your device, but if you haven't registered your device at Garmin.com yet, go do that and they will then offer you a free upgrade.
Other than that, I don't think you'll find anything free. The next best thing is to buy the "nüMaps Lifetime™". I felt this was the best deal they have.
