You connect your satnav to the computer with a mini USB lead. The narrow part, which is the same as the plug on the car charger, goes into the back of the satnav in the same socket that the car charger goes into. The USB connector goes into the USB port of the computer.

If you didn't get a mini USB lead with your satnav you might have one for another appliance that connects to your computer which would do the job. The same type of lead comes with most external hard drives and some camcorders and digital cameras. They are also sold in computer shops.

Can i down load the webupdater for free? my garmin needs to ''get a new brain'' but i havnt got any of the connection leeds or the cd with the wed updater. what are my options?

Basically, you have no options unless you purchase or borrow accessories.

You're going to need the connection leads to make any software or firmware updates as there's no other way to get them from a host pc to your satnav.

I suggest that you visit the Garmin website to see what leads you need (and to download any software) and then check out the likes of eBay or Amazon as the leads are often cheaper elsewhere.

Please take a moment to rate my reply.

Power tip?

If you need to run this at any time for a recharge then you will need the AC power pack and the Car power tip. Go to any garmin site and purchase or even try on Ebay as this is the cheaper option most times.

Please rate my help++++Thanks for using Fixya

After my Garmin accepts power from my car but it does not get past the "loading maps" stage. All I get is the Garmin logo? Please help!

You are using the incorrect power lead there are two available on to connect to your PC for updated this one can't be used the in the car even with a USB to 12V adapter.

You will need to buy the correct car version that is just 12V DC straigh intto the Garmin this one is just used for recharging in your car.

As far a I know Garmin is the only type of SatNav that has this Pequliarity with the leads.

Unit goes into computer mode when I plug in the car charger lead. I go through the 'loading maps' screen, then the PIN screen, and it defaults to computer mode and I can't get any maps to show.

The rear mini-USB port is defective, making the unit think its connected to a PC. The port needs to be resoldered or replaced. Please see this link:

See the section about the PC icon.

For online updating you must have Webupdater

Afterinstalling WebUpdater once from the Garmin website, perform all futuresoftware updates from your computer. Simply connect your compatibleGarmin device to your computer, then run WebUpdater from your computer's"Start Menu" by selecting "Start", "Programs","Garmin", and finally"WebUpdater".

Attention! It were cases that unit software was newerthan on Garmin site and it were losings of local language support afteronline updates. You must deside before do you need these changes offirmware or it's not so important.

Problem upgrading maps

If you are using a Windows 98 or 2000 PC there is limited support for USB devices and you often need to install a driver before the USB device can be connected.

If you are using XP and you can't see the Tom Tom device as another drive then you may have a faulty lead. The lead you need is a USB 'A' to 'Mini B' which can be found at Maplin:

Depending upon the country you are in you could get a similar product from a local electronics store but it will be called the same.

Also check that you computer can see other types of memory sticks. If it can't it may be a software problem or a computer USB port problem. Try another USB port if you have one.
