Black square image on screen

We will be watching either tv or a dvd and all of a sudden a black square takes up almost the whole screen so you can't see the program. We have to switch channels so it will go away.

I had this problem tonight and the closed captioning was not on. It was a black box so big that only about a 2" border of the screen was showing. I was using an RCA switch box and it hasn't happened again without the switch box but I honestly don't think it was the switch box. I think since our tv is days out of warranty it's decided to die on us.

Meknow is right I think. To turn off your closed captioning hopefully all you need to do is get into the setup menu. You didn't list what kind of TV you have so this is a generic solution. Go into menu and in a setup menu there will be a closed captioning way to select to turn the box off.
The reason sometimes you see it and sometimes you don't is because some programs have closed cationing and some don't.
And because you are only seeing a blank box and not closed captioning is because there are different closed captioning standards. CC1, CC2, etc.
So if you can find the menu item that allows you to turn off the closed captioning, it would be a good start to solving your problem.

Yes ,just turn off the closed caption. The black screen that you've seen is for the text massage, but since you had no massage written in the text box, that's why you see a black square cover your screen.

Sounds like the PIP feature is causing the problem with the TV if you are connected directly to cable TV without a box inline and getting these issues.

Black box on screen

On your remote should be a button called TV caption or text. Turn off the closed caption as someone hit it and turned it on by accident. If its not on your remote, then it is in the menu. Good Luck Ps Please dont forget to rate this thread.

Black Shapes Encountered on TV Screen

your problem is in the horizontal sweep and its called blanking. it happens on mostly zeniths sets as Ive seen it a few times and the only waty to fix it is to replace the entire chassis as there are no parts for zenith available just the module as a complete assy. Basicly, The blanking is suppose to only blank the top and the bottom of the fields of the screen that you don't see but it misfires and causes all sorts of lines, squares, and boxes on the screen. When i first was told of this problem i thought the same exact thing?? About the closed caption but the set came into the shop and didnt do the problem. I thought the customer was seeing things. Then finally on night late I CAME BACK TO THE SHOP TURNED ON THE BENCH AND THERE IT WAS!!! i SAW IT WITH MY OWN EYES!! I replace the Module and all was good. Thge repair was about 175 bucks. Good Luck in your repair. Oh this should not be attemted by a handi person, as there is dangerous high voltage inside these sets.

Can't hold a picture

Your problem while watching cable tv sounds like a bad tuner with little or no adjacent channel rejection. The problem with the DVD and I think to some extent the cable sounds like a video processing problem. This unit has digital video circuits and could easily cause the problem you describe. The easiest and probably the cheapest solution would be to replace the board with a refurbed unit. Two companies which sell refurbed boards are PTS Electronics, Bloomington, IN (www.ptsinc.com) and Tri-State Module, Evansville, IN (www.tristatemodule.com). Good luck.
