I have the same problem as the other user. My Onkyo DV-C501 says MECHA ERROR and it is no where in the manual. I have turned it off and on several times. I have unplugged it from the wall and the back of the unit. Still same error. Drawer won't open - nothing.
yes, the "mecha" fault keeps reoccuring. can this be fixed permantly so i dont have to keep shaking it for 10 mins. ( strangly it eventually works ever time) but fraustrating.

I have actually had the same problem multiple number of times now and am going to suggest you a rather "crude sounding" solution!!
First, atleast in my case the problem usually occurs when you turn the DVD player off while it still has DVD/CD inside and then turn it back on a little while later.
This is how the "solution" works. I just disconnect the player and give it a good shake !! This somehow dislodges the "stuck" disc inside and voila, the player opens up after reconnecting and pressing the open/close button. Sometimes it takes more than one "good shake". Sounds rather severe but works everytime !!

Mecha errors usually refer to a mechanical problem. I would inspect the whole thing for any obstructions, jams, etc. Hello lawsoncl thank you for answering me, I inspected the printer, both on the right and left, there is no obstruction, I opened the upper door and even no obstruction, as I recommend to proceed.

Isn't playback automatic? Did you check the user manual page 47?
It explains how to change TV system from Auto to NTSC to Pal, but
the manufacturer recommends leaving the player on the default setting because changing the region may restrict the kinds of discs you may be able to watch.
As per its user manual you cannot play back discs such as VCD (VIDEO CD) ,CD-R, CD-RW, CD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, etc., even though they may be labelled . Please refer to Onkyo DVC600 User Manual for more information.
Please do rate the solution as FixYa and revert for further assistance.
