Black bars across top and bottom of screen on HD programs

This happened suddenly a couple days ago and I can't figure out why. I first tried to adjust the aspect from the remote and nothing happened (it's as if the aspect button is no longer working). Then I tried to adjust the zoom settings though the menu > video and that bar is not active (it's gray and I can do anything with it). I'm stuck. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to fix this?

The picture is fine if I play a DVD or if I turn on a non-HD channel. It's only on HD stuff that I have the problem.

  • daveje Nov 04, 2008

    Jamie,

The HD source is my comcast cable box. I didn't touch the settings (nor would I even know how to) before this problem started. Do you have any suggestions about where I can look to check the settings and, if there is a prolbem, how to fix them?

Why is it that I can't see all the solutions/suggestions that have been offered (only teh most recent)? I'd like to have more than one to try if possible. Thanks

In your case the aspect ratio of the picture has changed from 16:9 to 4:3 and that is why you are getting the black bars. Since you said that the remote is not working you will find buttons in the TV itself to access the menu and change the setting.

Thanks

There is nothing wrong with your Plasma. Check the HD video source settings.
From where are you getting the HD video?

Try to play DVD in the tv and check if the black bars ,if it does then this could the problem with input signal . If a menu item is greyed out there are a variety of reasons why it could be. The reasons include: the current input, the incoming resolution, and other menu items being enabled or disabled prevents the item from being selectable....

Good luck....

    Try this :
To remove the black bars from the top and bottom press the FORMAT
button on the remote. The option available to remove the horizontal
    bars is Zoom.

Part of your color tube and the circuit board that controls the menu may be messed up from an electrical short. You will need a professional to check it out and to see if it can get repaired. The parts where the lines are may have been burned out and you may need a new color tube.

Try doing a full tv reset by leaving it unplugged overnight and plugging it back up and see if the lines go away. If they do not, you will need to get a professional to check it for you.

Here's what you do: try unplugging the cable box from its power socket and unplug it from the back of your tv. Let it sit for about ten minutes and plug it back up and see if it works then. If it does not, you can do one of two things: you can call comcast and ask them to send you a different and stronger signal, or you can call them and ask for a different cable cord because yours may have a short.

Try plugging the power cord into a different electrical outlet and/or surge protector.

    NOTE: These
symptoms can occur if the wall outlet is improperly wired or not
producing the proper voltage. If using a surge protector or extension
cord, it also could be faulty.

check all the connections. its better to remove for a while the connection and put it back again. will see what happen. sometimes this problem are only with the wire connection.

Hi my name is Maribel

It's possible that the screen itself went defective or the controller board for the screen. It's best to use the warranty at this point because the replacement board or screen panel maybe somewhat expensive. Being that it's only 8 month old, manufacture warranty shouldn't be an issue.

I think you can use doremisoft flip converter that can crop your black bars and other addition editing functions, such as cut clips, join videos, add special effect and so on.
YOU can free download at:
